Can anyone recommend the proper paint and primer for painting a galvanized steel bay on the rear of a house? Most of the metal paints I’ve found don’t work on galvanizing. I’m going to have to scrape it, and there a few rust spots, but other than that it’s in good shape. Any recommendations for a paint brand?

  1. it may be a a bit out there, but I think it you used a one-part boat paint for topsides, it would work pretty well.

These paints are epoxy based and hold up very very well in harsh conditions. While its not cheap, I’m sure it will last and add a nice layer of protection to the metal.

It may be worth a shot.

  2. AFAIK many paints don’t work on NEW galvanized iron, but if it’s weathered for 100 years there should be no problem. The last time I had my rear bay painted I specified Rust-Oleum primer and paint and it has held up very well. I think any oil based paint and primer would work.
