Anyone have any ideas as to how to remedy creaking, groaning, 90 plus year old floor boards? Our loft only squeaks and creaks horribly in certain spots (of course right outside of sleeping children’s rooms is one of worst offending areas!) but it is a real pain. We’ve heard that the way to fix is by locating the boards below – crawl space – which we do not have.
And does talcum powder actually work? Or make it worse…

Thank you in advance!

  1. Thank you everyone. It seems this might be a more major issue than we’d hoped. I think we might be out of luck, but I appreciate the comments.

  2. To really cure creaks, you need to pull up the offending boards, and possibly even the subfloor. then you can use shingles, shims etc. to fix the problem. We just live with it.

  3. My Floor Guy used tar roofing shingles unneath to prevent the creaking… but we were also in the midst of a gut renovation when he did it.
