hey does anyone know who can do this? I have shudders that have lead paint as well as the sections underneath the window frames.

  1. OP: Peel Away 1 or dipping is the way to go depending on cost versus your time and how handy you are. Heat Guns are also an option as long as they operate under 1,100 degrees F, but again it depends on how handy you are.

Make sure you always follow the EPA Lead Safe work tips which you can find at http://www.epa.gov/lead.

to 7:16: Correct, using a propane torch is specifically warned against. This is assuming it was lead-based paint.

  2. We striped paint off our mouldings using a propane torch and scraping tools. Now, I’m worried that it wasn’t the safest approach…?

  3. Note that if you use Peel Away, Peel Away ONE is recommended for lead paint removal, NOT Peel Away SEVEN. Peel Away 1 will also keep the paint in liquid form, and comes with special paper. Peel Away 1 is specifically designed for lead paint removal. Peel Away 7 is not, plus it stinks something awful. The only reason to use 7 is if you’re not planning on repainting.

  4. Had mine dipped by John deGamba 327 7th St 718-499-5788

We sanded them ourselves to save a buck but it took a looong time.

Don’t know if there is anything special required w/ regard to the lead.

  5. they can be hand strippped as well, it’s a better process than dipping. it’s not that much more and they would hold up,dipping is risky.

  6. your safest bet is to get the shutters dipped. peel away works but I think it would be a pain in the neck on shutters, assuming they are louvered.

  7. The safest thing to use without getting into HEPA filters would be a product like peel away 7 which keeps all the paint wet in a paste. It is slow and messy. If you want something faster you will need a ‘silent paint remover’ tool with a lead rated mask and a hepa vac to immediately suck up any dust.

Lead is still common in many plastics and was pretty nasty in gasoline until a decade ago. As long as you never ever dry scrape or sand lead paint and follow basic safety precautions, you don’t have anything to really worry about.
