I’m amazed at how inconsiderate many people are. Allowing their dogs to urinate on stoops and garbage cans that then have to be cleaned. Is it unreasonable to have the expectation for people to respect the property of others?

  1. How about you keep your frikkin trashcans off the street? Dogs pee on the street. If you don’t want your property to get wet, move it somewhere off of public space. And that goes for your hipster cycles parked on the sidewalk too. Get a garage.

  2. I think the problem is…if the dog can’t pee on tree pits or garbage bags, then where should they pee? There are only so many lamp posts and hydrants!

  3. Yeah, and I used to hate it when people would put their dog crap in our garbage cans outside our brownstone coop – unbagged – someone would have to clean that out – it stunk – and when I caught someone doing it and told them not to, they acted like I was nuts. Dog owners should have to be licensed, not just the dogs!

  4. I had three dogs (now 2) and despite being a K9 owner, I agree with the OP. There is really no excuse to allow your dog to do their business all over other people’s property- fences, stoops, grass in the sidewalk strip, tree pits. That stuff has to be maintained a homeowner.

I have found that in my neighborhood, it is the renters in the big buildings that are the WORST about this. They are sadly under the impression that the city owns and maintains anything beyond the front yard. They don’t own anything and don’t get that others may actually care about their property. Most were surprised to find out that the owner of the house is responsible for all the maintainence and gets the tickets for litter, crap, etc. We could not keep the grass in our sidewalk strip. It had to be replanted with new sod because of a new gas main project. The new grass, nor subsequent seed or sod, could not withstand the idiots and their dog urine. We gave up and it had to be removed despite repeated expensive attempts, lessening the green space on the block. One ass actually complained that she had to walk her dog farther because he would “only pee on grass”.

Don’t bother telling me to move to the suburbs- we’ve seen that other Brooklyn neighborhoods with strong nabe associations seem to have the ability to keep a nice lawn and sidewalk grass because of a culture of respect in that area. We try very hard not to let our dogs pee on anything but municiple property like the edge of the curb and they are trained to pull to the street for their other business. They’d LOVE to use the grass but we keep them off all of it. It’s the only really respectful thing to do. The training to do this took no more time than just getting them to go outside would. It’s called responsibility and more dog owners should get some.

  5. I agree with Dean Street. Many dog owners allow their dogs to pee on other people’s property and it is just not considerate. Even peeing on garbage bags that will be picked up by the collectors is inconsiderate. And of course, not picking up — that is just awful. I used to live on the Upper West Side and you can see where dogs’ pee have eroded some really nice pre-war buildings.

For all the dog owners who claim they can’t control when their dogs decide to do their business — it’s called training — and it’s your fault, not the dogs’, if they ruin other people’s property.

  6. Dogs pee outside. Get used to it. People not picking up their dogs feces however; that really ticks me off. They make bags that attach to your leash, so you never have an excuse not to do it.

  7. Just love how productive this forum is.Hard to belive thou some or most of you are professionals and or with some kind of degree,so sad.
Some of you are just more ignorant than your K9’s.
21st century, and living i the most advanced city of the world but still steping in feces and urine.
In the summer time it’s horrible when you walk in front of a stoop that dogs use as a urinal, waiting for the bus, subway entrances just to name a few.
Aniway some day we’ll get you back.

  8. I totally agree. I live in Marine Park where mostly everyone is a homeowner and the same person lets his dog piss on the cement that we have around our garden with the wrought iron fencing above. I hope I catch him in the act. We just painted it last year and the acid from the piss is peeling the paint. I also find crap from time to time that is not picked up. I caught my neighbor putting her bag of poop in the catch basin, and yelled at her. Dog owners are inconsiderate. If you have a dog curb it and clean up after it, otherwise don’t have one! It’s disgusting, especially if you accidentally step in it.

  9. i dont get it my dog just took a hot steemy dump in front of you house and you want me to clean it up , you dont want to clean it so what makes you think we do, by the way if it is in front of your house is becomes the homeowner responsibility to clean it thats the perks of being a home owner.
