Off Street Parking
I have a question regarding in off street parking The houses concerned are 289 and 293 16th St, in Park Slope. They both have the same thing going on. I’ll post the second picture on the next thread (maybe Mr B can squeeze them both in without distorting the scale) From the photo you can…
I have a question regarding in off street parking
The houses concerned are 289 and 293 16th St, in Park Slope. They both have the same thing going on. I’ll post the second picture on the next thread (maybe Mr B can squeeze them both in without distorting the scale)
From the photo you can see that the curb has been cut way. I know there is some sort of Grand Fathering with this feature
The actual part of the curb which is street level (were a car could pull into the house) is probably 3 ft wide. The part that is painted is probably 5 ft wide.
They are obviously serous about not parking due to the professional “No Parking” sign that’s only recognizable if you’re walking on the sidewalk
These are my questions
Is this legal?
If it is, then how can a 3 ft wide “driveway” be legal
If the 3 ft wide “driveway” is legal, is the 2 ft either side legal.
How do I find out if any of this is legal
If this is legal, who to I contact as to the ridiculousness of it all
They are three houses down from each other. That coupled with the fact that there is a fire hydrant involved, they “reserve” a bunch of space.
What to do………….

Cry me river.. You think it’s okay to break the law because said homeowner happens to be an “old timer.” The way I see it, due to the incredible increase in property values, the old timers should be kissing yuppies’ behinds.
newsouthsloper:
Yes it is an invasion. I agree that its a problem I myself have illegal parking spots on my block, but there is nothing you can do about it. Call 311 I am sure they have had Millions of phone calls regarding this issue about everyone with an illegal spot. But you have to remember that karma can be a bitch. Go ahead and call, most likely nothing will be done, they have had it since the beginning of time, they were here first and you shouldn’t mess with the people who were born and bred here. People on that block were poor as hell and they don’t need some newbie coming in and telling them what to do. and yes I agree that there is such a thing as order and rule of law, BUT most likely it will be in their favor.
10:37 – is that your house by any chance?
Kudos for posting this – whoever did that cut out should be fined.
Guest 10:37 – What does this have to do with bank accounts? It is not an invasion of private property if you post a picture of someone’s house. What they are doing is clearly wrong – making a public parking space into a private driveway. This is greedy and selfish regardless of home many millenia they have lived there.
I see the same problem on my block and it is largely a reason why parking is very tight in many Brooklyn neighborhoods. I would like to know an appropriate way to deal with it too.
There is such a thing as order and the rule of law.
if they have space to park their lousy cars, let them. but i have a problem in some neighborhoods with jackasses saving spots with cones for themsleves in front of their homes.
Too bad i don’t live in those areas or i would of so called the 311 on them. the reason they have it cause their neighbors don’t speak english. so nobody complains about it and is afraid of them.
you should seriously mind your buisness, regardless if its illegal or legal.. If they havent’ gotten the owner of the house yet, there is a reason for it. Its terrible that you have to post such a thing about someone else’s personal property, Its wrong.. those people have probably been in this neighborhood before you were born and have to live with the *>?T for years and now you have to go on this site and post such a thing. If its bothering you so much that they don’t have the heafty bank account that you do, throw em a few bucks and rent them a parking spot!!! You are invading someone elses personal property by posting a pic of their home on this site.
Those look like wheelchair access ramps, rather than driveways. Is there any chance they’re for a disabled person and not a car? I’m guessing not, given the steep stairs to the front door… But just wanted to raise the question before we all march over there with torches and stakes.
10th street between 3rd and 5th – near this w/end’s open house – is rife with these things. Saw one being “made” a few months ago. A home made sign, half days work for a couple of guys with some curb stone, a grinder and a bucket of paint, and hey presto. I don’t think they’re grandfathered so much as ignored by the city. Surely it’s a ticketable offense to post a no parking sign without cause.
Obnoxious.
These are illegal curb cuts and the “driveways” don’t have the depth required for a legal driveway. Call 311 and lets get our on street parking back. There are blocks throughour Brooklyn where all of the street spaces have been eliminated by these illegal cuts.
