I have a question regarding in off street parking

The houses concerned are 289 and 293 16th St, in Park Slope. They both have the same thing going on. I’ll post the second picture on the next thread (maybe Mr B can squeeze them both in without distorting the scale)

From the photo you can see that the curb has been cut way. I know there is some sort of Grand Fathering with this feature

The actual part of the curb which is street level (were a car could pull into the house) is probably 3 ft wide. The part that is painted is probably 5 ft wide.

They are obviously serous about not parking due to the professional “No Parking” sign that’s only recognizable if you’re walking on the sidewalk

These are my questions

Is this legal?
If it is, then how can a 3 ft wide “driveway” be legal
If the 3 ft wide “driveway” is legal, is the 2 ft either side legal.
How do I find out if any of this is legal
If this is legal, who to I contact as to the ridiculousness of it all

They are three houses down from each other. That coupled with the fact that there is a fire hydrant involved, they “reserve” a bunch of space.

What to do………….

  1. Hmm, 12:40 – Think you are confusing me with someone else – The only degrading comment I saw was “Take your yuppie money and go back to where you came from!” – From you.

I never implied money is issue or that my money somehow makes it a better neighborhood. All I am saying is that I should be able to park wherever is legal and proper to do so, anywhere in the city – Period, end of story.

Little slice of reality for you: Nobody giving a shit years ago does not make it right, all of the money in the world does not give me the right to break the law, just like living on a block for 30 or 40 or 50 years does not give you any special rights either.

    DUH!

  2. OP, maybe you won’t call 311 but I will. To piss off 11:42, and because the person who did that deserves to be fined. I think others should call as well.

  3. Mr Hancock, thank you for the final say on this.

Newsouthsloper: its not about who deserves it more, for you its about my (your) money, my money makes it a better neighborhood I should do and say whatever I want whenever I want and Im a yuppie hear me roar! YOU made THE degrading comment. noone deserves a spot because of how little they make, duh! oh and by the way you Yuppies ( how you like to call them) have been given everything in this hood. AND my friend, it was my money and others who have contributed to this neighborhood and YOUR happiness. I would PAY to see you cut a curb. Noone gave a shit back in the day when people did it on their own. A little slice of reality.

  4. “Take your yuppie money and go back to where you came from!”

Yes, of course, the thread degrades to yet another bout of class warfare…

I bet if this post were about yuppies cutting spaces into sidewalks, there would be an outcry that “Yuppy Money” is taking away parking spots from “Us hardworking low income types who deserve it more.”

    Am I right here, 11:52?

  5. Its BS. I’m a cop and we see lots of this kind of crap. No cop is stupid enough to give a ticket to a car parked in a “phantom” driveway. Your car cant be legally towed without a ticket (if it is its considered to be stolen and charges can be brought against the tower).

Call 311, who will refer it to the DoB. They WILL send someone out to give a violation which should prompt the owner to quickly get rid of the no parking paint. 2nd violation is $2500 if its not removed after reinspection.

  6. it has nothing to do with being an old timer fool.. and THE WAY I see it, you don’t deserve this hood. Take your yuppie money and go back to where you came from! wait better yet, go to the house and tell them what you just told us instead of writing it on a BLOG. let me know when you do Id love to see it.

  7. I dont want them to be fined, necessarily, I just want to be able to park wherever I am legally permitted to do so. Tell me 11:42, how many years do I need to be in my neighborhood before I can cut illegal spaces in the sidewalk at the expense of my newer neighbor’s convienience.

How may years on a block does it take to earn more rights than my neighbors?

  8. Its not my house Brooklynnative, Duh! Noone deserves being bombarded. Make your call everyone, do it, don’t talk about it just freakin do it….complain, complain your little hearts away.. maybe you will get what you want and maybe you won’t, will there be another POST about it! I am sure there will be! pathetic. you should be lucky that you live in this neighborhood and that you weren’t pushed out because of you uppity attitudes and obnoxious postings.. I wish there was someone I could COMPLAIN to about that! I am sure you will feel great once a fine is issued to those people, yeah they deserve it. no really they do.
