Hi,

I am mounting Exterior Lighting Fixtures to my brick house.
I want the fixtures to be flush mounted on to the brick.
I am getting mixed opinions.

My question is which is the correct way to go
1) Carve out a hole in the brick wall to insert a electrical fixture box then mount the Lighting Fixture on to the box
2) Drill holes for the screws of the Lighting Fixture on to the brick wall; mount the fixture to the brick via the screw holes.

Thanks

  1. It really depends on the fixture. You might be able to use a “pancake” box. It measures about 1/2″ deep, is available in 3″ and 3 1/2″ widths. This box can be mounted to the bricks’ surface, and the fixture then mounted to the box…but it depends on the fixture.

  2. I don’t understand option 2. You mean to run the BX cable though the brick and just have it wire nut to the the fixture? thats not cool.
You have to chisel out a space for your junction box. Run your BX into the box, mount the box into the brick (you can use mortar). Make sure it is square. Then attatch your cables and screw the fixture to the box. And then most importantly ( I found this out the hard way) get some exterior caulk or silicone and run a bead around the light fixture so no moisture or water can get in. If water gets in the fixture will short out.
    Good luck
