Hi all-We have been crawling all over this forum and meeting a bunch of architects to discuss the renovation of our new old house and specifically the lower 2 floors which will eventually become the owner’s duplex. We are looking for someone with vision and with problem solving skilss that has some specialization in Brownstones. We are not purist–we want to hold on to as much detail as possible but are willing to sacrifice some ifor comfort and convenience (but don’t want to be yanking down walls for no reason). There has to be a happy medium between the ultra modern architects and design that are invading brooklyn and the pain staking restoration projects. There also has to be a firm out there that actually has a website featuring some of their portfolio so that time is not wasted on either side if experience and style does not fit the bill. Any help is indeed welcome.

  1. MADE llc?

i’ve heard good things about them and their website looks great to me, but i don’t know (haven’t worked with them). i think they fit the aesthetic you’re talking about. maybe someone here will be able to tell you about them.

  2. we have been working with prospect architecture (advertised in the sidebar on this site) on a fairly extensive brownstone renovation. they are doing both architecture and construction management work for us. we are about a third of the way into the project, and they have been great so far.

  4. My cousin and her husband work primarily in a clean style that fits well in older buildings. They are designing my apartment on the UWS and I know they’ve done some projects at other firms in historic homes (not sure if they’ve done a full Brownstone, though). http://www.sohbr.net is their website. They are very attentive to detail and schedule.
