ELECTRIC UPGRADE IN 30'S PREWAR NYC APARTMENT COMBO-APPROX COSTS??

Hello. I am about to combine 2 small apartments (one 800 sq ft and one 500 sq ft) into one larger unit in a prewar bldg in NYC (Manhattan). It has been suggested that if I am going thru the expense of combining I should upgrade the electric. I will be using some music equipment (home studio), a few computers, 3 window A/C units, TV, and the typical things you find in a NYC apartment. I just want to be able to use a computer, have the TV on, A/C running, make toast and perhaps use a hair dryer at the same time without blowing out the joint! Can anyone give me some approximate idea of what that kind of upgrade would be? Any information would be greatly appreciated as I am clueless. Additionally if anyone has any suggestions for a good electrician who works in manhattan…great! Thank you very much.

  2. might not be a fair comparison, but i’m having my brownstone rewired and it’s about $4000 per floor. each floor is about 900-1000 sq feet. it also includes new meters and circuit breakers on each floor. plus 220 lines for kitchen appliances.

  3. You need to have an electrician come and look at your service & wiring. If your prewar apartment hasn’t been upgraded at all, now is the time to do it. You may want to have all new service if you have old wiring. This is something you should do before you move in since the walls will have to be opened and new lines will have to be snaked in. Get a few bids from a few different electricians. It’s hard to know what you really need without seeing your apartments.
