Can anyone comment on how Ikea kitchen cabinets in rental apartments have held up over the years? Do they show wear and tear readily, and should I just go with the extra expense of “real wood”? I know rneters are not the most careful people, but have no idea about the quality of Ikea cabinetry. Thanks.

  1. It seems pretty hit or miss. Most of the stuff held up fine, but one door on a bathroom vanity fell apart (literally). It was actually a nicer piece too – the whole thing was wood with panel doors, the wood around the panel just came apart.

Still, I wouldn’t do it again. First, it’s not as good of a deal as it seems. Everything is sold separately. An Ikea “cabinet” is just a three-sided box. Doors, shelves, feet, toekicks and handles are all sold separately. And dealing with ikea can be a real nightmare. They still owe me a door handle (three years later).

Still, I think you’re on the right track. You don’t want to go too crazy with rentals, it’s just going to be trashed in a few years no matter what you use. My brother-in-law has a 24-unit building, and he usually sticks with the low-end stuff from a home depot type place. It doesn’t sound like he was spending all that much more.

  2. By installing well, you should do more than they tell you in their pictorial directions. I just put one in myself and I glued the cabinets in addition to the hardware. There is a website ikeafans where you can get tips.

  3. we’ve installed three ikea kitchens in our own brownstone (two rentals plus ours). all look beautiful and have held up great. unbelievable value compared to custom cabinetry. but like the previous poster suggested…they must be installed well. not an option.

    good luck!

  4. I put an Ikea kitchen into my rental unit four years ago and it holds up great, and sill looks good. Both the wife and I feel like we got great value for money with that kitchen.

  5. Ikea cabinety will hold up better than cheap wooden cabinetry from what i can tell. They are rated highly in terms of construction for the price.

That said, you have to assemble them yourself so if you don’t assemble and install them properly, the quality of the cabinets wont’ reallymatter.
