Can someone please weigh-in on the safety of Bed-Stuy currently, particularly from the point of view of a white couple moving in with no car?

I have heard of muggings at the Utica Ave station stop – can anyone offer any insight?

  1. I’m a skinny girl who’s lived here for years and had no problem, but two women I know had incidences where they were mugged by kids who then tried to physically pick them up and carry them off. Both incidences were while they were walking home alone at night from the Nostrand A stop, before midnight. Then another guy I know was mugged on Nostrand around 11pm bc he stopped and got into a conversation with a guy who implied that he had a gun and that the guy should make a “donation.” Try to avoid the bands of teens and the guys trying to strike up conversation late at night.

  2. My husband and I have lived in Bed Stuy for 3 years, on Macon. Utica Avenue is our stop and it’s true there have been muggings by unruly teenagers in the past, but the police have been making an effort to patrol Fulton Park more. Neither of us have ever had a problem, but that’s because we use common sense and try to be aware of our surroundings– just as we would anywhere in the city. However, if my husband comes home after 11, he does take a car service.

  3. The only cops I see in my community are a bunch of fat slobs who on occasion break from their doing of absolutely nothing and bully children (I’m talking 6 year olds) by standing over them, intimidating them, making them cry, and thus continuing the viscious cycle of people like me despising their guts. Yes, it’s a prejudice.

If you want to feel safe, don’t do stupid things like walk around in the middle of the night in empty streets by yourself.

    That’s stupid ANYWHERE.

    Also, ride a bike.

We have lived in Bed-Stuy for 3yrs.(lived in Ft.Greene 13yrs.) My husband works in theater and comes home well after midnight often. When purchasing our home, his being able to come home late and being safe was a factor. Sad to say all most 1yr to the date he was mugged coming home from the Nostrand Station. It was a rainy night, not as many peds. walking home and he was caught on a block when no one else was around (not a usual situation) I must tell you that after that experience he drives from a station in Brooklyn to home or straight from Manhatttan.

My point is this. No neighborhood is completely safe. I kid you not I have been bitten in Ft. Green Park by more dogs than my family has experienced being attacked by other members of the human race. (My 1st landlord in Ft.Greene pointed out that some of the ugliest muggings happen in more affluent communities- not sure that I completely buy that)

You must exercise good judgement! We took the route that he would travel at that same hour before we signed the contract and determined that it was a reasonable risk with options. The plus at the Nostrand Station is that it is heavily populated. Any station before or after dark where you are the only person is a problem.
My advice. Get to know your neighbors, the neighborhood, your precinct, the community affairs officers and the commander. They will be there to help you when and if you need them.

Bed Stuy is full of wonderful caring people who want a safe neighborhood and wonderful families. People really can be attacked anywhere in this city. Move in, exercise good judgement and when in doubt – listen to your gut! Have a backup plan if you find that you do not feel secure coming home late at that station.

  5. my wife walks from the kingston/throop routinely bu herself at 1am. we live only three blocks from the station (macon), but there are always people about and we never feel unsafe. single women walk much further by themselves all the time. safest block i’ve ever lived on (NYC for twenty years).

  6. back to the ridiculousness of the question. if you are so scared don’t move to bed stuy, too many big black scary monsters. go to kansas, missouri wherever white people like you feel safe, your apprehension makes me and i am sure others sick! get out.

  7. Bob has good suggestions, and good for you on not taking the bait of those who are trying to be offended at the question. It is reasonable. If you had a problem with black people, you obviously wouldn’t move there. Give the lady a break.
