Can someone please weigh-in on the safety of Bed-Stuy currently, particularly from the point of view of a white couple moving in with no car?

I have heard of muggings at the Utica Ave station stop – can anyone offer any insight?

  1. I don’t live in BS, but people have often expressed similar concerns about my neighborhood. I’d suggest speaking to your potential neighbors before moving. You might also want to phone or visit the local Police precinct and speak to the Crime Prevention Officer or the Community Affairs Officer. I doubt that you’ll have any trouble, but it wouldnt hurt to ease your mind before making the move.

  2. I live in Clinton Hill, and have the same concerns. I don’t think I would be significantly less concerned in Brooklyn Heights or Park Slope. Unlike Manhattan, most streets quiet down here at night and a person walking alone, particularly female, is vulnerable after dark.

What do you mean by late night? I’ll take the subway home at 9, but after 10 I’ll take a cab, or the subway to Atlantic Ave and get a car service from there. You may want to figure out a walking route that puts you on busier thoroughfares, even if it’s a little longer walk.

FYI–you will much less worries in warm weather; many folks hang out on their stoops until 11 or so and tend to watch out for folks. It’s the cold, quiet nights that are problematic.

  3. removing the diamonds from soles of my shoes as we speak. not apprehensive in general, people have been extremely nice and friendly in bed-stuy when we are there. it is specifically the late-night walk from the subway I am concerned about.

  4. You should just walk around with a pitbull or two. No one will mess with you. Try not to wear your diamond studded gold teeth or chains late at night.

  5. I have no problem with that station, although I usually go out the Stuyvesant side, since it’s more convenient for me.

Walking home is like most other neighborhoods, but maybe friendlier – since people actually acknowledge that someone else is sharing the sidewalk by saying “Good morning” or “Hi”. Just don’t walk around with your head down, unaware of your surroundings with ipod headphones in your ears.

Are you moving to the area, or just checking it out?
