May 16, 2006 — A community group filed a lawsuit yesterday in State Supreme Court to block plans for a new park along the waterfront. The group, the Brooklyn Bridge Park Defense Fund, opposes a plan approved by state officials earlier this year to rehabilitate the 1.3-mile-long stretch because the plan calls for luxury housing in the park to help subsidize its cost. The lawsuit seeks to reinstate an earlier park plan that does not include the housing, as well as require state officials to analyze the impacts, like traffic congestion and parking shortages, that other development in the area might have on the park.

Ohhh? Do tell. What are the suits about?
I doubt that the Furman condos will go on the market this summer since it’s in the middle of several lawsuits.
Complain about boating for the rich on public land? Gee, why would we do that? Boats and marinas cost money, so does kayaking. Do you think most of the public can shell out that kind of money? I don’t. BTW a soccer field is not a park.
David, it’s a marina for private boats cf Chelsea Piers. There’s already a waiting list, don’t worry. The kayak launch north of BPC is BYO, except for a small and v. expensive rental that’s never open.
And, btw, I doubt it’s going to be a ‘bring your own kayak’ facility. This thread shows how futile it is to build anything in New York these days.
Opinions are like a-holes — everybody’s got one…
Don’t worry. One pier is going to have three soccer fields. So there will be plenty of grass for the poor to hang out on…
Yeah how dumb, having boating at a waterfront park…..
is there anything people wont complain about??
WTF?!? What the hell are we paying taxes for? Certainly not to give away public lands to private developers so they can “support” a park.
Just build the damn park already – you know, grass, trees, maybe a walkway by the water. There are parks like this all over the city, including in nearby DUMBO, that don’t need to be “supported” by being largely occupied by someone else’s residence. So it can’t be all that tough.
Sounds to me like someone is getting a sweetheart deal out of the legislature, all in the name of helping people, of course. I wonder how much money had to change hands to make this happen? This why the conservative “privatizers” make me nuts. Their ideology almost always seems to result in just some form of good old fashioned corruption — giving away the public patrimony to line someone else’s pockets. While the rest of us get nothing, or even less than nothing.
The “park” is going to be worst combo of Chelsea Piers and South Street Seaport. All those walkways and no grassy expanse.
