rose-plaza-0310.jpgWith a major City Council vote just weeks away, the future of a proposed mega-development on the South Williamsburg Waterfront is imperiled by a rivalry between two local Hasidic sects, reports The Observer. The trouble goes back to the death in 2006 when Grand Rebbe Moshe Teitelbaum passed away, sparking a split in the Satmar community between Teitelbaum’s two sons, Aaron and Zalman. The developer behind the 800-unit project known as Rose Plaza is a Zalmanite and claims that much of the opposition to the project is merely Aaronites playing power politics. The local Councilman Stephen Levin, who has been unusually vocal in his opposition to the project and stands to kill it in the Council, says he’s just listening to his constituents who are sick of luxury developments that don’t have enough affordable housing embedded in them. (Nevermind the fact that the developer, Isack Rosenberg, is the same guy behind the soap opera known as Warehouse 11.) Rose Plaza, however, contains 20 percent affordable housing, the same level as most other projects in the area that have been allowed to proceed.

  1. “i curse the unethical people who rented “apts” in commercial buildings illegally giving these idiots all the money and power.”

Back in the day, the artists who rented illegal commercial space were the ones that created your ‘cool williamsburg’ wine lover. don’t bite the hand that feeds you.

if you want to blame someone for craptastic architecture, blame the crooks who thought that they were above the law and because it benefited them, rented commercial spaces for residential use.

these hasids were made rich by breaking laws left and right, and getting away with it. the politicians that took their money (the same that killed the bike lane) are disgusting.

breaking our laws has ongoing detrimental consequences.

have zero respect for all involved in this mess.

Just a power play so his ‘constituents’ are awarded the affordable housing in some backroom deal. Levin isn’t going to support this if he loses the Hasid vote.

  4. the aaronites are strongly in favor of this project. it is the zalmanites who are in opposition – simply for the sake of power politics. isaac rosenberg is an influential supporter of the aaronite community, so the zalmanites want to weaken his financial standing.

the zalmanites delivered more than 3000 votes to councilmember levin in his primary.
