What's Going on at St. Thomas Aquinas?
A reader who spotted some new activity at the St. Thomas Aquinas School at 4th Avenue between 7th and 8th Streets (a new port-a-potty in the playground, cars, trucks, dumpsters, and a truck with the word “renovation” painted on it) wrote in to ask if we knew what’s going on. There’s nothing listed on DOB….

I thought it was pretty well known that the Catholic church never sells ANY of their property, even in the poorest parishes. They aren’t paying taxes on it so they can afford to let it sit empty. I’d be more interested in who is paying for all renovations if it is going to be used by PS 133 and what’s going to happen to the building after they move out?
It will be the temporary home to PS 133 students – the SCA entered into negotiations to use it because their original plan (build a new school while the kids were still at PS 133) was so insane.
NK makes a really good point – if it were available as a school, the SCA wouldn’t be putting all of it’s energy into tearing down PS 133 ( the oldest Synder school in Brooklyn) and building that huge box.
Hearing on the SCA plan on Tuesday – clips at 11
Workers were still on site at 10pm tonight. Interesting.
apt. conversion?? 1. are there not enough already on the market and 2. there is a space shortage for public schools. I think it would be great to house an elementary school there permanently….
> that would be a natural for a lovely apt conversion
My thoughts exactly, Denton. I’ve been coveting such a pad there for years.
The irony is that, of all the crapola stuff built on 4th, that would be a natural for a lovely apt conversion. Parking lot already there, part could be converted to garden, playground, or all of the above, the school building is lovely. Right next to the train. Too bad the church didn’t sell it at the peak of the market.
I used to walk by this school on my way to work and fantasize about getting a few people together and buying it. We’d each have a nice, high ceilinged floor to ourselves and a big backyard and a gymnasium.
They were working on the building this Saturday in broad daylight, so I think the “removing asbestos under cover of darkness” rumor is off the mark.
I’m just glad to see something happening with this building. That parking lot had been accumulating garbage for years.
looks like its 133:
