In the wake of yesterday’s ruling against the property owners in the footprint of the Barclay’s Center, the Daily News reported that Forest City Ratner will break ground on March 11. State officials said that the evictions would happen over the next several months. Reactions from those who stand to be displaced by eminent domain ranged from angry to belligerent. “It feels like I live in a state run by crooks,” said Daniel Goldstein. “There’s chains on the bar and a lot of people will be buying handcuffs,” said Steve de Seve of Freddy’s bar, which has served as a gathering spot for those opposed to the project.

I’ve been chained to a bar before, but it was chemical not physical. Otherwise, what da Guvna said.
The loss of Freddie’s is the one truly tragic thing about this whole episode. Wish they could just lift it up and move it a few blocks. Such a great bar.
People need to get a life. I wasn’t around when this whole process started so I don’t have an opinion on the initial way they went about it.
Be that what it may, it’s time to move on and get something built. Pretty simple really. What do you wan to do, backpedal and put back what was acquired through eminent domain. Don’t be ridiculous.
No matter where the moneu comes from, if it’s spent in this area, most will benefit.
Like benson said, the Empire State Building was built in something under 2 years. All this is ridiculous and just proves to everyone that litigious NIMBYs need to be factored into the timeline and cost of construction.
As someone mentioned the other day, all this litigation may have actually benefitted Forest city ratner in the long run!!!!
The Law of Unintended Consequences!!!!
But for reals… is there actually a finally plan for the site? (Final building design for the arena and other building — however scaled back or phased the project has become)

Chained to the bar? Is that really going to work? lol, come on. He’s been through all of the courts and lost. At some point you have to hold your chin up, content that you fought the good fight, and move on with some dignity.
I have concerns whenever the takings clause is invoked, but he has failed to persuade practically every court he has appeared in. My guess is that he wasnt alone either. In these types of government action cases, often you will get assistance or “friend of the court” briefs filed by citizens rights groups trying to convince the court that the government has overreached. Apparently the courts found no merit to their arguments.
Unless there is evidence of judicial corruption, it is simply irresponsible to label the course of events as being dirty. You can find all kinds of faults with Ratner, and the process that preceded the lawsuits, but I think you have to stop at the courtroom door. The conspiracy would have to broaden significantly for it to include all of the courts that have looked at this case, and any clear errors of law would have to be overlooked by the appellate courts. Even the federal courts would have to be on the take. At some point the cost of the bribes would exceed the profit on the deal ,lol.
Still, I guess the upcoming bar-handcuffs protest will make for good viewing. We brooklynites refuse to go quietly into the night . . .
souless stacks of concrete that will choke all life out of the surrounding area
It’s a truly rotten and crooked decision. Eminent domain is a dangerous tool in the hands of politicians. What public interest is served when we subsidize private interests with tax dollars?
What are they building? Do we know yet?
