Picketing at 360 Smith on 2nd Place
All is not well at 360 Smith Street. A tipster snapped this photo of picketers out in front of the controversial development on Second Place in Carroll Gardens. All is not well at 360 Smith Street. A tipster snapped this photo of picketers out in front of the controversial development on Second Place in Carroll Gardens. He says he thought it was the Drywall Union, which is problematic unless the developer can assemble a crack team of master plasterers in a hurry. Update: The blog Carroll Gardens Diary just posted that it’s the Carpenters’ Union that’s doing the picketing. Another Update: It turns out that the protest is about drywall workers but it’s about work taking place at a brownstone on 2nd Place and not the large development on the corner.

Stella D’OPro unions wanted a large pay increase, no cut to healthcare an 8 WEEKS OF PAID VACATION. Adios, boys. You got 52 weeks vacation now. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
thanks for the tip DIBS. i don’t understand the union mentality…
Stella D’Oro – case example of bankers leveraging a company into bankruptcy as they get big fees for themselves.
I totally agree with the reasons unions were first formed. There were huge injustices forced on orkers and conditions were deplorable. Now, they won’t give a little on wage increases and health care costs, like everyone else here in the US has had to do.
The result is that few sufffer dramatically (layoffs) to the benefit of the rest.
Remember Stella D’Oro guys!!!!
Very true, ENY. The recent mining tragedy is a case in point.
why don’t you scabs just go work in a coal mine for a few days.
Good point,ENY.
Historically unions have been instrumental in eliminating horrific practices and conditions ranging from child labor to extremely unsafe working environments(such as those in mines, factories and processing plants). There are many instances wherein unions have been instrumental in maintaining and supporting profitable industrial operations as well as harmony between labor and management. And there have certainly been abuses – on both sides.
“But doesn’t the fact that they are unionized help to protect them from becoming poor?”
Not really. In general it enables some skilled workers (who would not be poor in any case) to overcharge for their labor by limiting supply.
