New Nabe? It's All About The Taint

How’s this for a new neighborhood name? Taint. As in, “T’aint Clinton Hill and T’aint Williamsburg.” For some reason, the area between Classon and Broadway on the East-West axis and Myrtle and Flushing on the North-South doesn’t really fit into either neighborhood. Increasingly, however, in addition to the Hasidic specials in the area, more developments aimed at displaced hipsters are popping up. On Friday, we looked at 609 Myrtle. We also noticed a smaller-scale reno underway at 195 Classon between Myrtle and Park.
Halden is right on. This area used to be called Wallabout, referring to the area south of the Wallabout Bay, which is now the home of the Navy Yard.
Rumor has it that the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership (www.myrtleavenue.org) is working to designate a Wallabout Historic District north of Myrtle because of all the pre-Civil war wood framed homes in the area.
Oh Christ.
If we were to limit our lexicon due to every word that has a sexual innuendo according to the Internet, we’d have about eight words in the English language left to use. (See, e.g., such thrillers as spacedock(ing)).
We looked at this neighborhood a couple of months ago. There was a condo in the Chocolate Factory that had some appeal. Our impression was the neighborhood was not there and not sure when it would be. Although the guys selling the place said there was another place being developed that was slated to include a Whole Foods Annex which showed some promise.
On the whole, though, the neighborhood was fairly rough around the edges. Might be the next big thing but I’d expect that the subway limitation (you’re living and dying off of the G) may create some hurdles for it.
The whole area south of Division (most of which is now called Williamsburg) to Flushing or Park was once called Wallabout. Navy Hill was also used for some of the area between Flushing and Myrtle.
I’d be inclined to associate anything south of Flushing with the neighborhoods to the south – i.e., Clinton Hill and Bed-Stuy.
