The $118 million, 280,000-square-foot Steiner Studios won’t be finished until next winter, but it’s already been attracting serious star power like Nicole Kidman, Matthew Broderick, Uma Thurman, Will Ferrell and Mel Brooks. And now Spike Lee will be returning to his old neighborhood to direct “Inside Man” with Denzel Washington, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster. We’re all for this revitalization, especially since this type of creative industry is in “context” (there’s that word again) with many of the area’s longer-term residents. As far as the impact on real estate, we are particularly interested to see how the blocks between the Navy Yard and Park Avenue (where the BQE runs over) evolve. It’s mostly old commercial buildings currently used for storage/warehouse space, but certainly some of these places would spiff up nicely for loft living. There have been a couple horrible, cheapo slap jobs that have sprung up on the southern side of Park Avenue, something we hope we won’t see more of. What do other people think about the impact that a vibrant Navy Yard would have on the area?

  1. Steiner studios, while still a work in progress, has been fully up and running for a while. The first major motion picture to be shot there was – let me make sure I get this straight – the new movie version of the musical of the old movie The Producers, starring Broderick & Lane. Didn’t see any of them lunching on Dekalb (assumedly they don’t know what they are missing), and don’t expect to see Kidman. What I can say is that a lot of people involved in movie production who do/would work at Steiner are living in/ moving to the nabe. Not just bigwigs – gaffers, scenic artists, sound techs, etc etc.

  2. There will be a big spillover effect.

There will be increased demand for the services in the area, people need to eat lunch, people like to go out for drinks after work or for a nice dinner, people with perm. jobs like to live close to work, etc. The article talks about a locksmith that is selling more locks, think of the thousands of other businesses like this that will benefit throughout the area.

  3. As a resident of Clinton Hill I wish that the studios will create more great development to the hood, but my concerned is that the studios are inside the Navy Yard and I don’t see how they will affect the hood out of those walls?
Is Nicole Kidman going to come for lunch in DeKalb avenue?
