south 3rd
Anyone know what the story is with this development on South 3rd and Berry that’s sat untouched an uninhabited for the past several months. Judging from the ironwork and choice of brick, it’s clearly a Hasidic job but we wonder if they ran into problems with the Buildings Department or something…

  1. I don’t think it’s possible to say what is or isn’t a Hasidic neighborhood anymore. There are buildings on Classon between Willoughby and DeKalb — right across from the Pratt Institute campus — that house exclusively Hasidic families now.

  2. There is a difference between a development *by* Hasidim, and a development *for* Hasidim. The former will have the split kitchen and the staggered balconies. I’m pretty sure this is the latter (its not in an Hasidic neighborhood).

I think what ‘stoner meant was the Bricolage factor – bad design, crappy cast stone decoration, lousy construction details, horrific execution (OK, that last one’s not the arch’s fault), etc., combined with the profusion of iron grilles (which is a common feature in Hasidic nabes).

I don’t know that any of this has anything to do with Jerusalem, but I’ve never been there.

  3. those staggered balconies are for the sukot holiday, and so each one can see the sky. Just drive down bedford from Atlantic Ave to grand st.

  4. Jim- all buildings in Isreali Jerusalem are clad into a soft colored sandstone- which is being coppied here in brick. I think that is what the ‘Stoner is trying to say. Dont know what the iron or staggered balconies say/mean (excpet that there are lots of balconies in J’town too?)

  5. Maybe they couldn’t get some rabbi’s blessing on it, so now the place is untouchable. I don’t see the “staggered balconies”, so maybe they can resell it to some goyim.

  6. What about that long-vacant construction site on Broadway between Berry and Bedford? Big Corcoran sign up for the commercial space, but no activity since at least March when they started putting in the windows.

  7. Its been like that more than a year – construction started in about 2000 or early 2001 (the permit was pulled in ’99), and continued in fits and starts until it was finished at least 2 years ago. Sicne then, nothing except the apt with the television Anon 12:40 mentioned. About two or three years ago there were signs at the ground floor promoting a health club. There’s no CO listed on DOB.

The place has been a mystery to me too. And personally, I think its the ugliest new building on the south side (a tough feat to accomplish).

Oh, and the “architect”? Bricolage – no surprise there.
