Another big step for the Third & Bond bloggers…We just took down the sidewalk shed, ridding Third + Bond of an unattractive obstruction of what you have said is either a great or ugly façade mostly great. We want to take down the construction fence as well, getting rid of all the trappings of construction. We’re so tired of hearing the grumpy comments on the blog about timing since we know completion is near. Before we can take down the fence we have to be able to secure each building. Since putting up padlocked temporary plywood doors kind of defeats the purpose of looking less construction-y, we are working on getting the permanent front doors installed.

Above is the front door at the sales office. Looking at door catalogs we learned a lot about each other’s aesthetic, little of it pretty (pun intended). Someone wanted a leaded glass door. Someone else thought a door with raised panels matched the modern aesthetic. Finally, in the back of a catalog we found one that we all agreed could work. Except for the stain wasn’t right and the wood wasn’t right… Next stop, custom shop.

The doors were built by Steve Woodworks, a company located in Williamsburg, that Kiska knows. The doors are mahogany with a dark brown stain. The first sample we got, which is the one pictured above, has a purplish stain that clashes with the brown panel framing the door and the red panel above. So that’s why you do samples.

The door has rectangular glass cut outs that are vision opaque but not light opaque.

The framing for the door was done by Innovative. They also installed the façade panels and the windows throughout. It takes a minimum 3-4 hours to frame out the door. Installing the door is a piece of cake and takes less than an hour, maybe less than a half hour.

If you’d like to get a closer look at the door, the first open house of the season is scheduled for Sunday, 2-4.

  1. Completely disagree with the previous responder. Third + Bond is by far one of the highest quality new developments in our part of Brooklyn. Yes, some of the space are small, but they are very intelligently laid out and feel larger than they are. Check out the finishes, everywhere, the tiling, the grout, the flooring, all joints are nearly perfect. And, personally, the location is wonderful; the views are absolutely killer and are likely not to change much and you are 5 minutes from the subway and Smith St. I did see the Satori and thought that it was quite poorly designed and constructed. What are those apartments with stairs leading nowhere anyway?! Third + Bond is designed by Rogers Marvel, the same people who did the stunning town-homes on State and many other well-received projects and I seem to remember that Satori was designed by that Scarano character, right? Enough said.
I say, kudos to the Third + Bond team for developing something of esthetic and commercial value!

  2. Was not impressed in anyway. Went to open house on Sunday. Made Satori look pretty nice. Im not expert by any means, but you could tell that the apartments were not built with high quality materials. Very cookie cutter/Ikea esque. The bedrooms were too small and I feel like they did not use the space in the most efficient way possible. An example are the apartments with islands in the kitchen. The islands take up way too much space, so much so that it cuts off some of the space in the living room. Location wise, even though 3rd and bond is only a block away from Satori, there is a a world of difference in regards to quality. 3rd and Bonds physical location is disgusting. Satori’s is semi-disgusting. Now that said, 2 blocks away from either you have $3mm brownstones. But if I was a single woman, I would not want to walk around by myself at night (maybe even the day too). Now you can say, you get what you pay for and for Carroll Gardens, the prices are well priced. I really thought they were overpriced. I was most interested in the ~900sqft 1 bedroom/duplex with outdoor space. The price of 670k is way off. Satori had a ~700 sqft one bedroom with outdoor space, better view and better overall quality of the apt for $475k.
