For a building that’s been in the planning process since 2003, the Andres Escobar-designed boutique hotel rising on the former site of a plumbing supply warehouse on Fourth Avenue certainly has flown up in record time. Back in November, the chatter was that the owner was shooting for a first quarter opening, an event that seems increasingly unlikely with each passing day of March. Has anyone heard anything recently about opening dates or rates? We’d settle for a name.

  1. David,

I know this whole idea sounds nuts, but it wasn’t some extended game of “telephone” where facts gradually departed from reality with each retelling.

This was related to me by someone who got this right from the pizzeria co-owner’s (the son’s) mouth.

Yours is definitely a good point, but the parts of the issue that actually make sense are the following:

    1) How else would they uproot longtime tenants at key strategic corners

    and

    2) $40k/mo for rent is actually peanuts for them, relative to how much they rake in on a monthly basis

Still, I do agree that a healthy amount of skepticism is always a good idea.

So whatever the actual case may be, I am certain that Starbucks is walking around with a huge budget to nail down key new strategic locations.

  2. Webster – I doubt that rumor is true and if it is then the owner is a complete nut b/c if you assume the location is 1500sq ft (a standard Sbux store – I dont know the actual pizzeria) then you are talking $320sq ft for rent which is like 5x the normal rent in the area

  3. An interesting bit of dirt I recently overheard, re: Starbucks’ urban carpet-bombing strategy…

They offered the old pizzeria on the corner of Court and Degraw (Carroll Gardens / Cobble Hill borderline) a full $40k/mo rent if they agreed to vacate their space and rent to SBUX.

The pizzeria owners happen to own the whole building, and declined the offer.

But whoah. $40k/mo for a corner restaurant space.

Needless to say, I am sure there will be many, many new Starbucks opening in the coming years.

  4. i guess that’s why we only have two hotels in my part of bed stuy–and they are for hookers & johns (well technically they are in “clinton hill”)–because we live on all four floors and have tons of extra space!
