Amid all the photo ops at yesterday’s groundbreaking ceremony for Atlantic Yards, there was one big piece of news (well, two if you count Governor Paterson’s disclosure that he grew up on Grand Avenue between Gates and Greene!): Mayor Bloomberg announced that he’d gotten Forest City Ratner to commit to making 50% of the units in the first residential tower—which currently is slated to get underway in the first half of next year—on the site affordable. As the Brooklyn Paper reported earlier this week, Ratner’s also been toying with hiring David Childs in an effort to beef up on name brand architects after tossing Frank Gehry overboard.

  1. Yes, Brooklyn suffers from being in Manhattan’s shadow, we are so ashamed of ourselves, But now, with a basketball arena our pride will overcome that lurking shadow. Hallelujah!

    SUCESSION [sic] Now!

  2. “affordable” b-tch please. ill believe it when someone like me can actually sign a lease… and afford it. it’s such a disgusting political scam that exploits the disadvantaged. most of those “affordable” apartments will just go right into the hands of family members of people working on this clusterf-ck of a project anyway.

    *rob*

  3. Look, at this point we all know where we stand on Atlantic Yards. Its an incredibly divisive subject. That being said, yesterday (for me) was incredibly exciting and was phase one in the process of Brooklyn re-establishing itself as a city in its own right (no longer living in the shadow of Manhattan). Phase two? SUCESSION!!
