1st Street
Gee whiz, this stretch of First Street just off Fourth Avenue (right next to the McD’s on the corner) is really booming. We’ve got no idea what any of these projects are, though it’s a safe bet that this one in the foreground still has a few stories to go! Can anyone enlighten us? GMAP

  1. I agree with you completely, 2:30pm, and it’s exactly because I wouldn’t want my entire life to revolve around my kids that I wouldn’t want to have to watch them every second in a condo with a mezzanine. But it’s true kids need to simply learn to be careful and not act like total spazzes all the time. I’ve never seen so many children allowed to run at a breakneck speed indoors, like I’ve seen in the past few years. People baby-proof a home turning it into romper room, instead of teaching children how to behave like civilized human beings. It’s the first place children learn manners and SOME restraint, at home with their parents. Logically, the home needs to start to resemble the real world outside, at some point.

  2. If that style of stairs were unsafe, then they would not be issuing certificates of occupancy for buildings with the steps.
And still, how many news reports have you seen of kid falling thru these stairs? And you know that the ambulance chaser network crap that passes for “news” in NYC would be all over it.

If you have kids, you have to bother to parent your kids. And you can’t shelter them so much that they never learn how know what’s dangerous. That is all part of the learning process. News flash: the world does not revolve around kids.

  3. you snobs with your floating staircases should all DIE!

For the record, my brother bought a place with a mezzanine (in Massachusetts) and put in all new railings & stuff when he had a kid. Nothing ruins your day like a baby doing a swan dive into the living room.

  4. No, 1:35pm, what’s stupid is not paying attention to someone and then attacking them – if you read more carefully you would see (like others managed to do) that I was referring to the “ultra modern” condo buildings that have “floating staircases”. Do you know what those even are? They’re cement stairs with no carpet on them, with gaps between the stairs, and big gaps between railings. As for mezzanines that also have railings that are very open and airy, I wouldn’t even let my cat live in such a place. She’d totally dare-devil it and try to jump across to the stairs or something nutty. I LOVE how modern spaces look – they’re just not built to be safe. They’re built to be beautiful.

Are you serious about your statement that if you have kids you can’t have a house with steps, because it’s a hazard. Get real….. What do people who live in houses do all over the world. Some of things you are saying is just so ridiculus, ie stupid

  6. Yeah, are there any 3 bedrooms in Park Slope that are not on Eastern Parkway? It feels like its either a 2-bd apt or a whole house. Would love to find something in between that isn’t going to fall apart.
