atlantic-yards-2-020909.jpgLast week, the Empire State Development Corporation said that Atlantic Yards was not shovel-ready; now the agency is saying it is ready. I am afraid that my office put out some inaccurate information regarding Atlantic Yards and whether it was shovel-ready,” said ESDC spokesman Warner Johnston. The implication, says Atlantic Yards Report, “is that Atlantic Yards is in the mix for some sort of stimulus funds–likely to build the railyard that Forest City doesn’t want to pay for,” a notion promoted by Marty Markowitz in New York Post article today: “This project is shovel-ready, and the jobs it would create are needed now,” the Borough President said. Not surprising, Develop Don’t Destroy’s Daniel Goldstein feels otherwise: “It would be obscene to use such funds for an arena and to foster the misuse of eminent domain,” he told the paper.

  1. Mr. Joist,

“Before we end up with a …stadium [sic ‘arena’] with a massive parking log…”

I’m sorry to break the news to you but this is what they’ve had on the drawing board for a long time, namely, a lousy arena and lots of parking.

The minute it turned out there was little, if no, obligation on a timeframe to built the so-called affordable housing ocmponent, when it turned out many of the “later” phases would spread out over a decade or more, it was clear we would basically have nothing more than a parking lot.

What we’re missing is some vital infrastructure. The perfectly good, in fact, substantial and very sound, Carlton Avenue Bridge was chopped out for seemingly nothing.

    Hhh…

  2. Fine, so they did a flip-flop on the shovel ready issue in a blatant ploy to get a slice of the Obama infrastructure funds.

BIG DEAL! Does Develop Don’t Destroy’s Daniel Goldstein think he’s going to reverse all the deals that have been made, get a full public land use review and magically get the project back to step one?

THAT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Time to rally behind the project before we wind up with a crappy stadium with a massive parking lot surrounding it.

How many court losses will it take to shut Develop Don’t Destroy up?!

  3. Mr. Beloved Snark- that had better be a typo!!

I heard that expresson from a wonderful friend who lives in Bed-Stuy these many years and takes absolutley no bs from anyone. She would have made many wonderful contributions to the late lamented SOTD were she a b’stoner poster.
