Who could’ve predicted this? Some folks—Marty Markowitz, for one—say notoriously downtrodden and crime-ridden East New York is undergoing a renaissance and could become “the new Harlem.” There’s been a lot of demand for home ownership options in the area, most notably at the massive condo conversion MeadowWood at Gateway, where prices range from $110,500 to $350,000. “There is no question that the neighborhoods with higher rates of home ownership have the greatest stability, schools and community services,” says Markowitz of how ENY is changing. “Brooklynites outside of the ‘Brownstone Belt’ don’t realize that we have an affordability issue in certain neighborhoods and we’re losing families to other areas such as New Jersey. We’re committed to not letting that happen.” Other developments are also boosting the sprawling neighborhood’s profile, including the Related Companies Gateway Center shopping mall, which has a Target, Home Depot, Best Buy, and a supermarket and is going to be expanded in coming years with more big-box retail. Another large ENY home-ownership project, Nehemiah Housing Complex, is also currently being built. The complex will bring more than 2,000 middle-income units to the neighborhoods, with prices starting at $158,000. “Every place has its time,” says Fillmore Real Estate’s John-Paul Ho, who heads the team selling MeadowWood. “Now it’s East New York. It’s like a Cinderella story for the entire area.”

  1. Whoa!! Whats up Brownie, Stop deleting my posts. People can whatever about The What but, I cant respond??!!!

Here is a punk ass starker looking for me on Classon Ave LMMFAO!
You would land in the papers, as a victim.

“As a Black man, I must say brothers like you are bringing us down. You are perpetuating a stereotype.”

First no one gives a fuck you a “black man”! Second if you was one, you would raise hell about the covert assimilation of your neighborhood and this Blog! Third don’t wear that “I a Black Man” bit on me baby.

Folks, People want to talk tough talk but, I will back my shit up and Anyone wants to stalk me will have some problems!!!!!!

The What (Monday is coming BOOM!!!)

Someday this war is gonna end…

  2. 8:36 – Actually the joke is on you. The What had nothing to do with 10:19, because we’re two different people. Your cocky and arrogant belief that I am this person– with no way of knowing– is why I take the net less and less seriously these days. It’s apparently filled with a lot of arrogant jerks going online and talking about mere assumptions with *such conviction* and *authority* when they have NO IDEA what they’re talking about.

Go ahead and guess my shoe size, where I live, and what my favorite color is while you’re at it, since your powers of deduction are so brilliant!

Get a life, along with your buddy there, 11:42– and all the trolls here at brownstoner here who spend all day playing *internet tough guy* and *pissing match*.

  3. 11:42- I (10:49) am NOT The What. If you could rub two brain cells together, you’d see that this person and I have two different posting styles. I’m just an on again, off again browser of Brownstoner who was passing though the site yesterday evening. I couldn’t help notice that with your signature, you’d spent your whole day here posturing like a typical internet tough guy. You clearly have no life; otherwise, you wouldn’t spend an entire day getting into it with a stranger.

And you proved my point that you have no life by posting AGAIN at 11:42 and being so obsessed with a Brownstoner poster that you assumed I was him.

One last thing: if you read the Urban Dictionary definition of Internet Tough Guy, you’ll be embarrassed at how close some of your posts have come to matching what they have under that entry. The only thing you didn’t do was claim to be a martial arts master.

  4. Hey The What…

Isn’t it kind of pathetic that you are commenting about how much we are obsessing and stalking and have spent the ENTIRE day on this but….

    so are you.
    and so have you.
And at 12:40 in the morning?

The joke is on you, brother.

As a Black man, I must say brothers like you are bringing us down. You are perpetuating a stereotype.

  5. Thanks, 7:01. I do have to disagree with you about Harlem, however. There has been plenty going on there for years, not just when the white folks “discovered” it. Church based affordable housing, Harlem civic groups which have renovated and revitalized whole blocks, as well as a well established black upper class, centered around Convent Ave in the 140’s and around City College. (I encourage anyone who loves brownstone architecture to take a field trip there, it’s absolutely beautiful, and always has been.)

But like most minority communities, Harlem only receives bad press, never good, until the “rediscovery”. The rest of NY never knew about all of the vital work Abyssinian Baptist and other powerful churches have been doing for years, revitalizing block after block of houses. You never hear about Graham Court, a magnificent apt building on par with the Dakota and the Apthorp Apartments, and home to Harlem’s upper crust since the 20’s. Lower Harlem, from 110th to 125th around Lenox is getting all the attention and press now, but other parts of Harlem – Convent Ave, Sugar Hill, the fantastic prewar apt buildings on the far West Side, as well as the Jumel Mansion area – all these have been quietly lived in and maintained all these years. Harlem is just beginning its second renaissance.

  6. Dear 9:05,

Judging by your writing style and signature (tWhat = ghetto ass punk bitch!), I have scanned this board to see how many times you’ve posted, as well as WHEN you posted.

    You posted comments at:

    10:33 AM
    10:59 AM
    11:49 AM
    12:23 PM
    1:16 PM
    7:11 PM
    9:05 PM

So it appears that you have spent the ENTIRE DAY on Brownstoner getting into a pissing match with a complete and total stranger. Not just a few hours. The ENTIRE day.

To top it off, you spent the better part of this day trying to encourage an actual RL physical altercation with this person.

You not only don’t have a life, you don’t work, as evident from the large span of time you have available to you to post this much on a blog.

Please do some serious soul searching, because you’ve clearly now hit bottom.

    Sincerely,
    Concerned NY Citizen
