The new building at the corner of Steuben Street and Myrtle Avenue in Clinton Hill is just a few glass panels short of having its entire skin. From the looks of it, they’re just starting to frame out the walls on the inside so occupancy’s still several months off. When it’s done, though, the Gary Shoemaker-designed condominium will contain 35 market-rate one- and two-bedroom apartments plus 7,000 square feet of ground-floor retail. Given all the flap over the lack of affordable housing at 163 Washington, it’s interesting that there hasn’t been a peep about this building. Could it be that it’s not going to ruin the sunlight in anyone’s backyard?

There’s no uproar about this building b/c as the first poster said, it’s 5 stories, not 17.
While a glass box isn’t a preferred design for a new building, that stretch of Myrtle badly needs buildings that aren’t crumbling 19th century warehouses. As a nearby resident, I’m fine with it.
to 12:48 – the gym at Pratt is only a couple of blocks away
4:16 We are no longer in the Victorian Age. Castles are cool. Why don’t we build castles? When I castles in Scottland they were amazing. We are now. I am not saying that this building is inspiring, but it uses our current day materials in a practical and, to me, pleasing manner.
Can’t wait till the people living there start selling ad space in their windows.
You are so right it looks like an office or maybe a hotel. Why don’t they build some decent looking buildings? BK has so much beautiful old architecture but most of the new buildings stink. Why don’t they take some inspiration from the original Victorian architecture? What have we done to deserve this?

Looks like an office. Whole foods is not opening another store until after The Gowanus store.
1:19 OK. No more jokey, jokey. Just serious serious whiney whiney.
The building will suck. Just look at it. It looks like a half-height DSW in a strip mall. There won’t be any good retail. The apartments will be priced higher than what you thought would be a fair price for the finishes, location and ceiling height. People will still buy them.
All new buildings suck. I love vacant lots. Landmark everything. Buck Fush! Free Mumia!
