Just saw this today and figured I could shed a little insight since I rent in the building next door (with the blue siding).
It most certainly isn’t just an exterior renovation, they tore down the entire interior of the house and rebuilt with steel framing. Trust me on this, as we still have cracks in our wall from when they took out the staircase. The wood frame that was there previously was uninhabitable to say the least, with the rear of the house pulling away from the rest of the frame due to (imho) shoddy window installs.
The rear of the top floor was raised to accommodate a level ceiling (those three wood frames were built as one with a slope to the rear of the roofs to provide runoff, our kitchen has 6 foot ceilings) and there’s a huge picture window in the rear on the second floor. The bricks are definitely for the entire building.
That’s a big pile of bricks to do just the garden level. I’m thinking that there is a total re-cladding in this building’s future, and I’m also thinking that it’s going to be less than charming. Hope I’m wrong.
It’s a frame house so I’d expect (hope?) they’re replacing that old jersey brickface with clapboard siding or shingles – either wood or a good cement board like hardie. In that case the bricks would be for the ground level and maybe the stoop. Of course anything’s possible – the house to the left is also a frame and is covered with bricks (the city says “artificial” but they look decent in the photos).
Parts of Degraw are in Carroll Gardens and parts are in Boerum Hill + maybe even Gowanus.
I think DeGraw is Carroll Gardens, not Boerum Hill as the tag suggests.
