condos
Before last weekend, we’d never set foor on Maspeth Avenue in East Williamsburg. Heck, we didn’t even know it existed. So we were surprised to see that this one-block stretch has become condo row. (See photo on the jump.) The first project one sees, and the first to reach market, on the block is 57-59 Maspeth Avenue, a 17-unit (16 one-bedrooms and just a single two-bedroom) building on the north side of the street. Nice high ceilings and Scaranoesque mezzanines galore. According to the Developers Group website, only five units are still available. The biggest bang for your back in terms of space is a ground floor apartment asking $660,000 that has 1,963 square feet and a garden. Who’s been inside?

  1. i have a friend who just bought one of these. i haven’t been by to see her new place yet, but she’s having a condo-warming party a few weeks from now, so i guess i’ll get to see it then. please, someone say something nice about these so i when i get drunk and chatty, i have something other than her sex offender neighbors or scarano’s bad track record to talk to her about…

by the way, the transportation isn’t bad over there. i have several friends who live within a few blocks of this place, and the Graham L is really close. the stores/restaurants/bars around there aren’t bad either, although i hear they closed the Pourhouse recently.

and i think the sex offenders living around there is pretty much true no matter what NYC neighborhood you’re looking at. i gave up looking up those stats a while ago, it just makes you unecessarily paranoid.

ok, one definite minus that i can see: all the homeless guys from the barbara skillman shelter two blocks further down have to walk right by these condos to get to the train. so you’ve got a pretty constant stream of sketchy characters walking down the block, and not too many other people (most of the rest of the other buildings are warehouses).

  2. I looked at this building in the spring and one issue I had with the street is that there are several other new developments on the same block, but they are ugly pink-bricked Fedders buildings, so it sort of kills the look of the block.

  3. This is absolute insanity–luxury housing in what must be the absolute CRAPPIEST area of Brooklyn, within a quarter mile of the SUPER POLLUTED Newtown Creek and on one of the most heavily trafficked industrial streets in the city. These are destined for foreclosure sales.

  4. It’s ironic, I was on that street for the first time last week going to the FedEx ground pickup location, which is a couple blocks further down maspeth. I don’t know the nabe that well, but I was stupefied by this development and the others on that block. I don’t know the area that well, but it seemed like an odd place for such lux looking condos.

    Interesting to see the prices.
