The Lofts on Dekalb is a 32-unit complex spanning three buildings between Tompkins and Throop. At this point, the developer has seven units left; in addition, an initial buyer is selling her place before ever moving in. While we’re not seeing a whole lot of charm, it is a fair amount of space for the money. The resale unit (which is having an open house on Sunday from 12:30 to 2), for example, is $595,000 for 1,838 square feet. Not bad. The units available from the developer aren’t as cheap on a per square foot basis but do have outdoor space and signature Scarano mezzanines.

7:12: Bushwick, baby — I got equity like you do, I don’t get called faggot every 100 feet, I have subways up the yingyang, and I have prospective tenants banging the door down when I have a vacancy downstairs. And I don’t have to look at massive projects looming over every block. How interesting that Bushwick gets nicer the farther from Bed-Stuy you get. I do not at all understand the appeal of Bed-Stuy or why it’s 15% more expensive for homes in worse shape than Bushwick, besides the allure of the brownstone, which I admit is intoxicating.
That said, if you like Bed-Stuy, more power to you, and my post actually defended buyers and this developer. What I said still stands: “Different people have different values and priorities than you and me.” You aren’t the “you” or the “me,” you’re the “different people.” And that’s okay, okay?
6:33 pm in reference to never living in a the bleak “hellhole bedstuy” I have a serious problem with that comment. there are beautiful blocks as mentioned earler in bedstuy. This community has many college educated, family and community oriented patrons. Have you been any of the brownstones in this community stuvesant heights etc then you would quickly notice the beauty of the homes in this community is second to none
jeremy,
bed-stuy is georgraphically huge and economically diverse. wall streeters, 4th generation ph.ds, dentists, dancers, drug dealers, designers, maids, generic hustlers etc. some blocks are magnificent, others fugly. some sections grand, others blighted. there is no “you and me”–just me with all my big fat equity because i could see what you couldn’t.
I’m having trouble understanding what there is to complain about here. No, hell no, I wouldn’t pay anything to live in the total and utterly depressing and bleak hellhole that is Bed-Stuy, but if people do, who cares? They’re not being duped or ripped-off — it’s still cheap in the scheme of things (the scheme being New York City) and it’s new and the spaces are good, and the drawbacks are to be plainly seen by all comers — no amenities, no charm, no transportation. There is nothing dastardly or evil or misleading about this development. Different people have different values and priorities than you and me.
I agree Putnam-denizen, the profanity is a bit much and unnecessary too. Enough of the sailor mouth, trash talking already. The wall street bonus babies must be hitting this site hard, pounding the pavement for cheap deals.
Anon at 3:32 — DeKalb between Tompkins and Throop isn’t walking distance to anything other than Woodhull Hospital and about five different housing projects! There are NO brownstones on this block — but there are a couple of brick buildings with the windows cemented in! Lovely!
Yes, maybe someday the area will improve. But for the next 20 years, you’d best enjoy buying jumbo sized packages of chicken legs at the supermarket, cause that’s all you’re going to find there. How to improve things? Well, I’m all for economic integration, but unless there’s greater educational investment and employment opportunities for the folks who live around here, it ends up being a matter of poor folks being displaced. I agree with you that there needs to be a neighborhood improvement association, but that’s tough for people to put together when they are so busy trying to keep their heads above water.
yeah 9:50, there is a difference. the areas close to the g are in walking distance, 1 or 2 blocks in some cases, to Clinton Hill.north east hugs clinton hill and williamsburg. the pressure for housing will never cease. YES this area is bad now, but it will not always be. but it will be quite a wait. it is not going to happen over night. still and again however, the prices are too high. there needs to be a north east bed stuy (CHANGE THE NAME!) neighborhood improvement association to interface with the feds and state to work on the area. what a waste. brownstones are not as nice as some other neighborhoods but are lovely non the less. all a brownstone block needs is cleanliness, trees and and window boxes/stoop plantings. some of the deeper ills, not sure how to handle tha. one think that would help is to bring more affluent people in the community so that the concentrations of poverty and all that that entails can be broker up.
Anon at 1:22 am — how do you know that 25 units have been sold? As far as I can tell, no one lives in this building.
Anon at 8:50 is exactly right. There is a world of difference between the part of Bed Stuy closer to Fulton and the north eastern section.
as a resident i do hope and pray that these properties help the community to turn the corner. As a newer resident less than 2 years it seems that there are two bedstuys the side closer to the a/c line which is much nicer and the blocks behind madison and jefferson which seem to be progressively deteriorating as you proceed closer to myrtle and G-line. The buildng of these apts on dekalb were very overly ambitious. I believe it is a reach to place this development over there it seems to be the only beauty in a seemingly bombed out and depleted area. I do admit that I do like the price and forsee the a significant price drop for those apartments.
