The new office building on Atlantic and Nevins that’ll be leased by HIP is looking more or less good-to-go these days. When we last checked in on it in spring ’07, it was a big hole. Architecture-wise, we find it to be a “there it is, I’ve already forgotten what it looks like” kind of building. They do get points for aligning the facade and roofline, though!

  1. 10:50—I guess you have very strong feelings about 457 Atlantic Avenue. I personally think it looks very nice and is a good contrast to Atlantic Avenue. I think all of the development along Atlantic Avenue is really attracting a nice new tenant mix. Which in turn is brining up the profile of the neighborhood. I am all for increasing mine and everyone elses property values!

  2. I think this building gets some things really right – cornice, brick, roofline. and some things really wrong – white bands in the middle of the windows, the weird moderno intermitten vertical lines of windows.

  3. Given the limitations of the zoning on Atlantic Ave., I can’t imagine a better architectural outcome.
The tone in which so many of these posts is written is exceedingly smarmy.
I am not an architect, a broker or a developer. I’m just a guy who appreciates less attitude. And this building conveys less attitude.

Gabby, please indicate what you think is a better and more contextual example of recent office construction in Brooklyn. It would give credibility to your posts.

  4. I live around the corner and think this building turned out to be a little better than I expected. Unfortunate that the building will have no bround floor retail though. That stretch of Atlantic would really benefit from it.

  5. Just passed by this building the other day with the wife. We like the textured brick and the massing of the structure so its in context with the rest of Atlantic Ave. But we both commented that the windows look a bit small in relation to the rest of the building.

    Just my $0.02

10:50, why don’t you promote another building. That POS as 457 atlantic is horrible and looks as though it was constructed with rubber cement and colored construction paper.

  6. What about the development next door at 457 Atlantic Avenue? You guys should really give the brownstoner readers an update on that project. It looks pretty cool and I think it is almost finished with closings beginning soon.
