The Demise of the Addition at 333 Carroll?

Watching the development of 333 Carroll Street has been painful, to say the least. More than a year ago it looked like there was hope for a restart when some permits were renewed. (We’ve been wondering about signs of life at this site since 2007!) Passing by recently we noticed two men doing some housekeeping on the roof, although it didn’t look like any major construction had started up. And while a check with the DOB shows a permit for mechanical and plumbing work that just went through, PMFA noticed something more important. According to this earlier permit, the hulking, two-story addition is to be removed. Not enough of the structure was constructed before the 2009 rezoning of Carroll Gardens, and the building’s height is now limited to 50 feet. PMFA opines: “The day the steel structure comes down will definitely be a sweet day for Carroll Gardens.”
Is 333 Carroll Street Steel Addition Coming Down? [PMFA] GMAP DOB
Wasn’t this a Scarano project? It is pretty amazing that one of his in Dumbo (Bridge and Water Street) is coming down, but if this one too, well, things are looking up!
Darren433: As one of the Carroll Gardeners that has been advocating on this, along with Katia and others in the community, I’m pleased that we’ve received great support from Councilmember Lander. He highlighted the building on the Stalled Development website he launched a year ago, got a lot of online media, intervened with the DOB, got the Commissioner’s attention, and reached out to the developer multiple times to continue to press for the community’s interests. The latest word is that the developer has come around, but the proof will be in the proverbial pudding.
I look out at this P.O.S. addition every day from my bay window at Carroll and Hoyt. I’ve seen minor movement lately but I don’t trust that building owner (I’m expecting some 11th hour shenanigans). But when (if) it does come down you’ll see some dancing in the streets in our neighborhood.
The removal of that horrible eyesore is soooooo long overdue. It amazes me that none of the local politicians ever lifted a finger to fix this problem (please correct me if I am wrong about this).
I agree that the warehouse itself is very attractive and has a lot of potential in the right hands.
“Putting aside the now defunct rooftop addition, I love that old warehouse and think that loft apartments there could be great.”
I agree, it’s a great space to use for apartments or condos.
There has been a little activity in the past few months, mostly removing debris. No deconstruction of the addition.
That permit is from October. if they’re serious about removing it, they sure are taking their time.
