The makeover of 17 Evans Street in Vinegar Hill from bland replica-style brick townhouse to sexy modern spread is almost complete. Pretty genius. The owner now gets a swanky pad on an effectively private cul de sac overlooking the old Commandant’s House in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and within walking distance of the Vinegar Hill House. With private parking to boot. The architect is Dumbo-based TKA Studio.

  1. I nearly bought the townhouse immediatley to the right in the picture.

That entire block was built new about 4 years ago. All of them are configured as two family homes. One owner unit upstairs and a rental unit downstairs. YOu could use it yourself, but the layout was less than ideal.

The construction was actually pretty well done, my only criticism was that the building ran together with nothing on the facade to indicate where one stops and the next starts.

My other BIG problem is that right across the street in the Navy Yard is the second largest sewage treatment plant in NYC. The smell from it at times is terrible. Google the effects of sulfur dioxide on your health and your brains. After a while you cannot smell it, but you are still breathing it in. I decided not to raise a family there, even though I LOVE that street.

  2. Nice brick buildings? They’re bulls#it infill where the architect didn’t get the window size or spacing right.

I like this a lot. I wonder if you can see the Navy Yard Commandant’s House from the upper floor. I’m pretty sure you can see the sewage treatment plant.
