Yesterday Crain’s reported that politicians and developers have banded together to raise $8 million in funding for Willoughby Square Park, the long-planned public space that’s supposed to be constructed atop a 694-space underground garage just south of MetroTech Center. Last year the Economic Development Corp. cut close to $7 million from its budget that was earmarked for the park, according to the story, “essentially putting the brakes on Willoughby Square.” The developers ponying up money include Avalon Bay and Acadia Realty Trust; both are required to provide parking for their planned Downtown projects. The story says the park’s funding is supposed to be finalized within the coming weeks, though it’s unclear whether that means actual construction is imminent.
