“In a Bakery Window, Shades of Miss Havisham” may be the best headline we’ve ever seen in the Times. They’re referring to the aged display cakes in the window of La Villita Bakery on the corner of Bedford Avenue and Grand Street in Williamsburg. Haven’t seem them? They’ve been around for what seems like forever and they look something like this:

“A Busby Berkeley formation of storks and pink and blue babies decorates one cake. Dingy swans hold up the classical columns of a wedding cake in ruin. On a decrepit meringue island, a naked knockoff of a Barbie doll is marooned in the sugar sand next to an overturned toy bottle of champagne.”

When we posted about this bake shop a few months ago, one commentor claimed, “I used to walk by there late at night and watch the mice play in the cakes that were built like little houses.” Sounds pretty gross, but according to the Times, the cakes sold at the shop, which are made to order for $25, are “pristine.” Our commentors also mentioned that the bakery’s coffee, Cubanos, and sopas are tasty enough, but has anyone tried one of the fresh-made cakes?

  1. I never went back after the oddly bitter pastry and wretched coffee I got a few years ago. No reason to think it’s any better now, and with Oslo just a few blocks south, really no reason to ever go back (mouse playgrounds notwithstanding).
