NY Creates Red Show – Valentine’s Craft Fair
NY Creates in association with the Brooklyn Historical Society will hold a Valentine’s Day Weekend Crafts Fair at BHS. Come pick up handmade jewelry, clothing, pottery, soaps, sweets and other treats for your Valentine at the fair. The fair will take place on the ground floor entrance of BHS. Another sweet treat: All visitors to BHS receive free admission to the museum during the Fair. Friday & Saturday, February 12 & 13. Brooklyn Storytelling
Selected people from Nina Talbot’s portraits will share stories of their life paths. Storytellers include: Eric Newsum, son of Tuskegee Airman, Fitzroy Newsum. Fran Onne, daughter of a 100 year old Chinese woman who lived through the Japanese invasion of China, and one of the first Chinese woman immigrants to the US. Daniel Rivera, Founder of the Restoration of the Taíno Nation of the Antilles. Elder, Storyteller and Spiritual Leader of the Nation. Eva Rand, survivor of Mauthausen concentration camp – what was it like to live in a Nazi concentration camp. Come and enjoy this special event! The Brooklyn Flea
The winter Flea is located at Skylight One Hanson (the former Williamsburgh Savings Bank across from the Atlantic Center mall) on Saturdays and Sundays. The Valentine’s Day that Changed America
On February 14, 1884, two days after a young Theodore Roosevelt became a new father, he suffered an unimaginable tragedy. His mother, Martha Bulloch Roosevelt, succumbed to typhoid fever and was followed in death just eleven hours later by his wife Alice, who died of Bright’s disease. How T.R. coped with this tragedy would have a pivotal impact on his life, the country and the world. Join Patricia O’Toole, Pulitzer Prize finalist and author of When Trumpets Call: Theodore Roosevelt After the White House, for a discussion. Afterwards join Green-Wood historian Jeff Richman for a visit to the gravesites of Alice and mother, Martha Bulloch Roosevelt, and other members of the family. Attendees will each receive stickers that identify them by neighborhood, allowing them to choose their new objects of affection both by looks AND by geographical location. From 7-8pm there will be some delicious free Valentine’s Day cocktails for all, provided by Solerno, the Italian Blood Orange Liqueur. Small Scale: A Night of Japanese Food & Bonsai

During the meal, Julian Velasco, curator of BBG’s C.V. Starr Bonsai Museum, will give a short talk on the art of bonsai, and celebrated choreographer Momo Suzuki will present a mini program with the Japanese Folk Dance Institute of New York. Guests will dance the rest of the night away to DJ Saiko Mikan spinning ’60s-era Japanese pop and Shibuya-kei. An open sake bar and more nibbles from Momo Sushi Shack will be available to all.
