Prospect Park Tours
Prospect Park was designed to be a cultural institution in its own right and a beautiful public amenity year-round. Kate’s ninety-minute walking tour highlights key destinations created by co-designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. Follow the Park’s extensive watercourse as it winds through through meadows and woods while learning how residents of Brooklyn, a thriving independent city from 1834 to 1898, sought to create a park to compete with New York’s Central Park. The Brooklyn Flea
The Brooklyn Flea is located in the Bishop Loughlin schoolyard in Fort Greene on Saturdays and at Skylight One Hanson (the former Williamsburgh Savings Bank across from the Atlantic Center mall) on Sundays. The Flea features over a 100 vendors offering a great mix of vintage, antiques, jewelry, and food. Opening for Artist Rachael Warner
Repop of Brooklyn is hosting an opening reception and art show featuring the paintings of Rachael Warner. Curated among Repop’s selection of mid-century, industrial and vintage furnishings and decor, Warner’s large vibrant works will be on display as part of Repop’s ongoing series of art shows. A graduate of Pratt and Brooklyn resident, Warner writes that her paintings, celebrate boldness and personal strength, as well as explore ideas regarding the dynamics of power. George Underwood will be having an opening titled: Old Enough to Know Better, Young Enough to Pretend. Underwood uses photography to locate desires that tap into a universal human experience while addressing the technologies that currently mediate our primal urges. Look as long as you like at Underwood’s rich images — and then come back to his work and look some more. There’s a real magic to the way that these photographs relate to time and place and, unlike Friendster, Myspace, or Facebook, the more attention you devote to Underwood’s pictures, the more relevant they’ll become. Kite Making
We’ll embrace the changing season and fall breezes with a kite making workshop! Use simple materials like tissue paper to create a beautiful and functional kite (we’ll teach you to fold some paper planes too!) Brooklyn Food Coalition’s Good Food Fest takes over Myrtle between Vanderbilt and Clinton! There will be cooking demos, a best dish contest, beekeeping, Teen Battle Chefs, community chefs, free tastings…and more! There will also be a community painting activity with Clinton Hill Hardware! The Brooklyn Free Store Grand Opening Celebration
The Brooklyn Free Store in Bed-Stuy has been open for over two months now, facilitating mutual aid and reducing the need for consumerism though the free exchange of clothing, electronics, books, and much more. On Saturday, they are inviting everyone to a day of skillshares, live music, free food, and fun! Come to learn bike repair, get your face painted, or simply hang out and get to know your neighbors at the Free Store.
