No offense, but Curbed should read a little more carefully…that Renovating Backwards story isn’t about a brownstone; it’s a prewar coop decorated (not renovated!) in a frenzied-Victorian-clutter style by an owner moving into a Victorian house in Maine. The price should’ve been a giveaway. And adding a truckload of Victorian fretwork to a structure from a different historic period doesn’t “renovate.” It just looks silly. No wonder visitors freaked out – the place looks like an antique shop. Interested in the accurate restoration of Victorian brownstones (and tasteful updating for modern use while respecting the basic period look)? Check out the annual house tours in Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, and other historic neighborhoods. Every now and then you’ll see the real thing.
