  1. I think too much drama about being near the jail. Biggest nuisance would be from correction employees with their parking permits parking anyplace they feel like it. Which goes on now anyway because criminal court bldg is already there.
When you walk by the Manh. house of detention are you even aware of it? Or pay any attention to it? I don’t and when brooklyn one was open never made any difference.

  2. On the forum, someone says they heard the expanded jail would go on the lot across Atlantic Avenue where the gas station used to be. I always assumed the expansion would be where the construction trailers have been on the existing lot. Does anyone know where the expanded jail will go?

I was very confused about the Packer kids passing the jail to get potato chips. Wha?

  3. I suggest that the State Street condo buyers, Packer parents, and other fainting-hearts start relishing the possibility of such proximity to Diversity, Social Justice, and “Edginess”! Aren’t these all qualities prized by our chattering classes?

  4. In re: photo of Watchtower buildings…these are prime buildings and I’ve been watching for years wondering when/if they might sell these and if they might become condos. Has anyone heard any word that these might become part of the big sell off they have been engineering?

  5. Appropriate spot? There’s no spot more appropriate than where it is.

The jail’s current location is adjacent to all of the courthouses and many substance-abuse treatment programs that serve offenders mandated to rehabilitation. Also, downtown Brooklyn is far more convenient for inmate visitors than Riker’s Island, which takes at least two hours one-way to reach from Brooklyn via public transit.

People interviewed on TV last night kept mentioning “the children”, as though 99% of thosed housed in BHD are sex offenders. Most are accused of non-violent crimes and are in jail briefly.

As the article states, some neighborhood businesses thrive on the foot traffic that the jail creates.

And might I add that the city does not need the permission of the local community to proceed with this expansion?

    Selfish yuppie NIMBYs.

  6. Problem is that in many ways the jail location is appropriate spot. The building behind it is the Criminal Court building. So instead of bussing someone back and forth from Rikers Island for court appearances, they just have to move across State Street.
It is my understanding, that when was open the jail was primarily housing those awaiting trial and not those already sentenced.
