When the mansion was decomissioned I heard it was sold to Gov. Hugh Carey’s son or son in law. A relative in any case. I had understood at that time that it was a long term lease, though, not an actual sale. Looks like things moved on.
He bought it in 1997. His specialty is neurobiology, and he is a leading specialist in his field.
It was without a doubt one of the greatest buy in NY history. The area has changed so much, and it’s an amazing historic mansion.
Did the professor inherit the mansion? What’s he professor of?
I love the way bankers get bonuses in good times and bad. So much for the idea of capitalism rewarding the winners and punishing the losers.
Why aren’t more people questioning the bankruptcy (literally) of neo-liberalism?
Slopefarm, thanks. That Vinegar Hill area sure is something. Very Twilight Zone & Enchanted Valley. Hidden away in the middle of a huge city right next to the freeway, dead quiet, birds chirping, cobblestone streets, perfectly preserved 19th C buildings, and looming power plant — is anyone home?
The owner of the Navy Yard mansion is a professor at Rockefeller University. You know how much he pays in property taxes? $3,200. Rob has a good point about taxes. It’s patently unfair that a studio owner would $6,000 a year while someone sitting on a $10M+ property would pay so little.
The city should have an AMMT system (adjusted Minimum and Maximum tax.
If your property is worth less than $500,000, you shouldn’t pay more than $5,000, and if your property is worth more than $4M, you shouldn’t pay less than $40,000.
Pop tarts are OK?????? Processed food snacks are ok but not homemade baked goods? I guess we are now completely into the food nazi stage of City living. Where are all the rightwingers to scream about how we are becoming a socialist/nanny state? Because in this case I am agreeing with them.
And the Church story is so upsetting. The diocese is so insensitive to the community it won’t even consider an alternative plan. They dismissed it out of hand.
As a parent who has often baked for a school bake sale, I believe that baking with your kid educational and nutritional. I’d rather the kids eat homemade cookies or brownies than a Twinkie any day.
Gorging is probably more appropriate!!!
