I’m sure if someone were to dig into the particulars, somebody knew somebody’s brother back when the lease was first signed.
Also, does anyone remember what shape the location was in back then???
Denton, you got balls and size so not much scared you back then – ie fringe to the timid is A OK to you then
gee Santa, even now I’m in good enuf shape to walk down the hill. I bet even Biff and the Champettes are!
well the restaurant itself isn’t in the middle of Brooklyn Heights either.
was 77 much worst than 80?
re. MTA failing to rate contractors:
i spent 14 years working for the MTA 7 of which were in construction management and contractor oversight. you would not believe the incompetence of many transits managers and employees, many of whom have no qualifications to be in their positions and are there because of whom they know or because their family member got them in. millions of dollars are wasted every day because of this. contractors get away with murder and then get paid extra to correct their mistakes. seen it almost every day. the occasional newspaper picture of a token clerk sleeping on the job is barely the tip of the iceberg. there is no accountability for what goes on.
I moved to Brooklyn Heights in 1980 and it was hardly ‘fringe’.

yeaah okay – we’re talking as a spot for a restaurant, not living.
I moved to Brooklyn Heights in 1980 and it was hardly ‘fringe’.
Big deal re: The River Cafe paying so little in rent.
They opened there in ’77, and are reaping the benefits of signing a longterm lease in a ‘fringe’ area that blew up.
This stuff is commonplace in the LES, lots of restaurants pay less than 5k a month in rent for the same reason.
I’m more concerned about how they can charge so much money for crappy food.
