  1. ohheythere,

Sounds consistent with my experience. It seems to me that if they’re trying to make an ethical or moral case about the importance of using union labor, they ought to be asking students for solidarity and not heckling them.

  2. The union has been completely disrespectful to us Pratt students and I have no idea why. They think that yelling and screaming outside of our dorms at 8 in the morning and harassing us with flyers and yelling at us as we go to class and telling us how we’re part of the problem is going to help them. Honestly I don’t know what they think Pratt students can do. Like I said before, they need to take this up with the construction company and leave the students out of it. I don’t support them in any way at all.

  3. My position on unions is usually one of more solidarity than Dave’s but after I rode past their rally Monday to a chorus of “go back to class sweetheart” I’m wondering if maybe Pratt made a calculated decision to hire a crew that could actually be respectful of their students.

That came after I watched a genial man asking, in earnest as far as I could tell, what the school had done. A protester snarled at him that “they musta done something or we wouldn’t be here, would we?” His tone was pretty combative and hostile, way beyond the question he was asked, which I heard as very sympathetic, in the “Man, they must be bad, what’d they do?” vein.

So until the building trades unions can actually figure out how to treat people with something resembling respect, I don’t have a lot of sympathy for them.

PS. I’m a good ten years out of college. While it is supposedly flattering to be mistook for a student, I actually don’t enjoy street harassment.

  4. The photo is of Added Value’s vegetable garden – they get local teens (from Red hook and presumably elsewhere in Brooklyn) involved in running the garden and then selling the vegetables at Added Value stands at various farmers’ markets.
