Coming Soon: Olive Vine Cafe
316 Court Street at Degraw Street, Carroll Gardens
We spotted this signage at the soon-to-open new branch of Park Slope’s Middle Eastern spot, the Olive Vine Cafe. (A Brooklyn Life snapped a shot of the storefront, too). There’s some buzz about this block on Chowhound, where one user heard that next-door neighbor Donut House is also closing and will also be replaced by a Middle Eastern restaurant. Hmmm… two falafel joints operating side-by-side sounds like a West Bank Story waiting to happen. Anybody know if there’s any truth to this rumor?

What Will Become of Magnetic Field?
Atlantic Avenue’s Magnetic Field is closing for good this Sunday. Brooklyn Heights Blog says, “We know that the bar is for sale and there’s a juicy 7 year lease attached to it,” but what should become of the space? BHB readers suggest opening a taco stand, another Zombie Hut, or “someplace that serves delicious hot wings and has a huge beer selection.” Any better ideas?

Pies ‘n’ Thighs Is Making a Comeback
“Sarah Buck, Carolyn Bane and Erika Geldzahler left their devotees of North Carolina-style pulled pork and first-rate fried chicken hungry in January when they closed, but they plan to reopen this summer in a larger location nearby: 166 South Fourth Street (Driggs Avenue), Williamsburg, Brooklyn.” [NY Times]

After the jump: Rumor has it that Frankie’s on Court Street is expanding; Gridskipper tracks down the best tres leches in the Big Apple…

Is Frankie’s Expanding?
“If I’m not mistaken (and that rarely happens, right?), what you are looking at is some substantial work on the two storefronts that are set to become some version of Frankie’s, part II, on Court at the corner of Luquer. The work to sure-up the walls of the corner space (formerly a dry cleaners) is now done, workers have started bricking the garage/driveway that leads from the current Frankie’s backyard to Luquer Street (not visible in this photo), and now the facades on both of the Court Street fronts are being reworked. I saw the Franks poking their heads into the two buildings over the weekend.” [A Brooklyn Life]

Killer Tres Leches at Bonita
338 Bedford Avenue, Williamsburg
“This popular Williamsburg Mexican joint (with a sister outpost in Fort Greene) offers a unique take on Tres Leches: it’s heavy on the milk. With chocolate mixed in to the cake, each piece proves as delicious as it’s aesthetically appealing.” [Gridskipper]

  1. I went in to Donut House this morning and asked if they were closing. They said no. I believed them. Case closed.

Can you all go back to making up stories about real estate and leave real Brooklynites alone?

  2. I don’t care when it originally showed up, we can’t lose the ‘Nut House. Come on. They actually speak Greek in there and argue all summer about the Yankees and the Mets.

And seriously, falafel around here is getting to be like Thai in Williamsburg. Enough.

  3. Donut Hut only appeared in mid 90s here. I welcomed it when I lived in the neighborhood. Before there was little choice in diners in the area for breakfast. It follows the style of traditional Greek diner. It was by no means a “last authentic brooklyn place”.

There is another Greek diner around Bergen and Smith which is more recent if you want honest Joe fare.

  4. Oh many, Donut House is one of the last authentic Brooklyn places in the hood! It reminds me of my grandfather’s old donut shop on Kings Highway when I was a kid. I can’t believe it! I hope these are just silly rumors. I love the family that runs that place.

  5. PLEASE PLEASE STAY DONUT HOUSE!!!! please we love you so much and go at least once a week.. if we sign a contract saying we will go 2-3 times a week could you stay? please please please..
