Now Open: Marco Polo Take Out
347 Court Street, near Union Street, Carroll Gardens
Chef Francesco Insigno, who has been working the kitchen at Marco Polo (on the corner on Court and Union) for 18 years, is now prepping panini, brick oven pizzas, and traditional Italian food for the restaurant’s new take-out joint. The place opened yesterday evening — did anyone stop in?
Now Open: Canteen Delicatessen and Café
57 Fourth Avenue at Bergen Street, Park Slope; (718) 789-2133
“A ten-seat, takeout-focused deli arrives in Park Slope.” [Time Out New York]
Now Open: Lokal Mediterranean Bistro
905 Lorimer Street (Nassau Avenue), Greenpoint; (718) 384-6777
“Offers a blend of Mediterranean and Turkish specialties.” [NY Times]
Closed: Matamoros Puebla Grocery
193 Bedford Avenue, near North 6th Street, Williamsburg
“Looks like Matamoros Puebla Grocery on Bedford Ave — with its great taqueria in the back — has finally closed after having a For Sale sign in its window for 18 months or so. Walked by yesterday and they were gutting the place. I’d just eaten there a couple days before but they didn’t say anything about it closing, so maybe they’re just renovating. But it didn’t look like it to me.” [Grub Street]
After the jump: Steak on a budget in Fort Greene, a roti recommendation, and the best pizza in Carroll Gardens
Chez Oskar’s Budget Beef
211 Dekalb Avenue, Fort Greene
“Families and gabbing friends flock to this longtime Fort Greene bistro decorated with a pastel tin ceiling and massive, colorful paintings for dependable French faves and a half-pound hunk of hanger steak served alongside buttery fingerling potatoes, artichokes and mushrooms, a juicy feast made tastier by the $14 price tag. ” [Citysearch]
Recommended: Ali’s Roti
589 Flatbush Avenue, near the Prospect Park stop on the Q train; (718) 462-1730
“This is a place in my neighborhood and while it has a steady stream of customers, they don’t get the attention they deserve. They are super-friendly and the food is fresh (the cook gives away extra food at the end of the day so as not to re-use) and delicious.” [Chowhound]
Carroll Gardens Pizza Poll
“Lucali ran away with best pizza in the ‘hood this year, snagging a whopping 50% of the vote (54 nods). In a move that made this blogger proud, the oldest standing of the bunch, Sam’s, grabbed second. Finally, My Little Pizzeria on Court/Atlantic snubbed The Famous House and Savoia to snag third place.” [Bergen Carroll]
how did My Little Pizzeria wind up with 3 place? I have yet to have a slice from there that I actually enjoyed. Plus its in Brooklyn Heights, not Carroll Gardens…
settle down, 3:50. just because someone calls the joint out for serving boar’s head after claiming they’re modeled on katz’s doesn’t make them a hater of the 4th avenue renaissance. it makes them a hater of mediocre food passed off as good.
has anyone eaten at Lokal? I do love My Moon. Realize nothing can come close to the outside garden dining and the stunning decor of My Moon, but how’s the food at Lokal?
I usually have the lamb kebobs at My Moon which I think are very good.
I went to Marco Polo on Thanksgiving a few years back, there was an incredibly hot woman playing the piano…otherwise the food sucked.
the sub show on bergen between flatbush and 5th kicks ass….
city sub
canteen seems alittle pricey from what I saw through the window. The shitty sub shop across 4th ave has huge sandwiches for 2 or 3 dollars less.
hot everyone likes shitty sup shops tho. Or the shits either.
Had several very blahh meals at Marcopolo when I first moved to Carrol Gardens in 1999-2000 before the birth of Smith Street’s restaurant row — as I recall it was very pricey for the quality of the food. All I can say is that I hope they’ve improved (I somehow doubt it though).
What about Giardini’s (Carroll/Smith near F/G subway station) for best pizza in Carroll Gardens? It’s never really let me down– it’s cheap and it rocks.
i LOVE canteen. so nice to have it right there on the way to the train.
don’t care that it isn’t a replica of katz’s.
this is great for the neighborhood.
the haters must wish it were another taxi depot instead.
