Cafe Grumpy and Gimme! Coffee
“You might first notice the guy behind the counter with the pirate-worthy tattoos or the chromed-out espresso machine he’s operating. Your attention might be momentarily drawn to the name of the beans he’s using — like Agrica BV Calama Marka or Platinum Blonde: The Rowdy Gals’ Espresso Blend. But at the best cafes in New York — like Café Grumpy in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, or Gimme! Coffee in Williamsburg, Brooklyn — it’s the coffee itself that will grab you.” [NY Times]
After the jump: One Girl Cookies, Joyce Bakery, end-of-season festivities at the Red Hook Soccer Fields…
One Girl Cookies
“The folks that work here are super, super nice, and it always smells really good, and it’s a lovely storefront and all, but insanely tiny cookies served with tweezers and stacked in boxes festooned with ribbons are just not my bag. Still, I order a pumpkin cookie/buttermilk gelato sandwich, hoping for edification. One bite later, I decide it tastes like sour milk and feed the rest to the pitbull tied up outside of CVS.” [Clean Plate Club]
Joyce Bakery
“Miniature iced two-bite cupcakes are tempting enough: a dollop of marshmallow delays the impact of the dark chocolate variety, milk chocolate frosting embellishes vanilla cupcakes, and a swirl of cream cheese bolsters red velvet ones ($2 each).” [NY Times]

Red Hook Soccer Fields
The end-of-the-season/Independence Day celebration is this Saturday at the fields, 11am till sundown-ish. In addition to the usual great eats, there will be a DJ, live music, clowns (?!), and a special soccer tournament. Should be even livelier than usual; and after this, things begin to wind down… until next spring, of course. [Chowhound]
