Vaquero Fruit & Elotes
Red Hook Ball Fields, Bay Street side (first tent at the corner)
“The first tent you see when entering the fields, we like to consider Vaquero’s a sort of flavor ambassador, a welcoming committee to all who enter the Red Hook food scene… After debating why Ms. Vaquero makes such tasty elotes, we decided the secret ingredient was ‘love.’ Love and cheese. Lots of cheese. You see, this is a very generous elote. No skimping whatsoever. The queso blanco is freshly ground, so it tastes especially moist and salty and creamy. There is enough mayo to hold everything in place. And chili powder delivers ye olde knockout punch.” [The Porkchop Express]
Yola’s Cafe
524 Metropolitan Ave, between Union & Lorimer St, Williamsburg
“I’ve always been a fan of their big beefy burritos, but lately I’ve been working through their recurring daily specials, all of which impress. Corn shuck-wrapped tamales come stuffed with tangy chicken or sublime adobo pork. Fish tacos, each with a perfectly flaky flounder filet swaddled with salad and guacamole in two flour tortillas, could easily be served at a fancier restaurant at twice the price.” [Gridskipper]
After the jump: Drinks at Five Front and Porchetta is reborn as Carniceria.
Five Front
5 Front Street, DUMBO
“At first glance it looks like any other restaurant bar: classy patrons and a well kept bar that offers a meager, if well chosen, collection of beers and spirits. But don’t go for the pomegranate margarita. Buy a drink and walk back through the dining room and out into the large back patio. There beneath a canopy of trees, strung up lights, and the looming Brooklyn Bridge, is a little lounge.” [Gothamist]
Carniceria
241 Smith St., nr. Douglass St., 718-237-9100
“The ghost of Jason Neroni has been banished from Porchetta. The Carroll Gardens restaurant is coming back today as Carniceria, a Latin American steakhouse helmed by Novo and Calle Ocho chef Alex Garcia. Garcia’s menu will center on Uruguayan free-range beef, but he also plans on sophisticated Nuevo Latino appetizers, including oxtail empanadas with tomato escabèche and rosemary Malbec sauce, and a seviche of scallops lightly poached in white wine.” [Grub Street]
