Over the long weekend another 1.4 acres were opened up at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Three sand volleyball courts are now in the mix, along with a restroom building and an outdoor food court. Milk Truck, Bark, Blue Marble Ice Cream, and Uncle Louie G’s Italian Ices were all out serving their wares on a very sunny Saturday. Was anyone able to stop by?

The dog run is located along Furman Street right by the southern entrance to OBBP and the garage in OBBP. Also, sod has now been installed on the lawns on the southern side of Pier 6 and it is in the process of being layed down on the lawn in front of the restaurant building.
where exactly is the dog run? the “lawn” area says “coming soon”, but unless they’re planning on laying sod, good luck.
The folks running the show at the BBP need to set up tents or gazebos to provide a little shade for park goers. It will be years before the trees grow enough to do so.
stopped by early, a zillion little kids. Only one of three volleyball courts open. A lot of sun, everyone already stakes out the tiny shaded areas under the tiny trees. Very pleasant, all in all.
Stopped by on Sunday afternoon to catch the ferry to Governors Island. The food carts were all doing a brisk business, with Uncle Louie G’s having the longest line. There were even staff from the ferry getting an order. One of the things that I noticed was that only one of the volleyball courts was operational and it looks like the other two have substantial work still needed before they are ready for use. The roof bar on pier 6 will be a great amenity once it opens and I can imagine that it will be mobbed but I wonder if they will have a system of keeping kids from running up and down the ramp all day. If they don’t find a way of preventing damp children from disturbing my drinking, I may have to take my custom elsewhere.
Ditto what @minard said. We were out on Saturday early using the dog run and the kid run and it wasn’t crowded yet, but all was coming together nicely. The new part feels like the middle of something, and is missing the other end. Hopefully the trees will grow fast because the sun is merciless out there and there’s no place to hide.
Yes, I dropped by. It was mobbed with children playing in the water park, many fewer people out in the new section. It is definitely still a work in progress but it looks very promising.
For some reason, and I have noticed this before, the sun seems particularly intense and bright out on the piers, bring sunglasses and a cap with a visor.
I did not sample the food, something about hundreds of wet tykes that makes one look for a snack elsewhere. It’s a great place for parents and kids though.
