The commercial space at newish development 515 5th Avenue has been empty for as long as we can remember. So we were surprised when Racked reported that a designer vintage store recently moved in. The spot, named Life Emporium, “Is a non-profit supporting a Jewish organization for sick kids called Chai Lifeline.” There’s two floors of vintage for men, women and children, furniture and knickknacks. This joins other vintage shops like Guvnor’s, Beacon’s Closet and Odd Twin further north on 5th.

I’ve been in there several times since i stumbled upon it a couple of weeks ago. Excellent store, i’ve bought a dresser, some dishes and clothing. I agree with Skippy, the prices were a pleasant shock.
I live across the street from this place and went the first day they opened. The interior is layed out like a fine boutique (at least the upstairs, anyway) but the prices are more in line with resale/thrift shops. A pleasant surprise. An outpost of MONK is also nearby on 5th between 16th & 17th (I think).
I think the antique-y signage (and content of the store) is kind of a neat contrast to the building. I used to live across the street in ’08 when this was empty; glad to see something going in there finally.
i don’t think this building looks ugly OR cheap looking. in fact, the opposite.
“3 years old and they have already had to do repair due to water damage”
99.5% of the time it has to do with the contractor cutting corners on installation, not the products, to save a buck.
bessie yeah, i agree with that. which is why im always sad when salvation armies close down.. but this is good i guess, anything than just another generic bar
*rob*
oof! sorry bob- of course I meant, quite a few of us will agree with you. I’m celebrating Fumblefinger Friday.
I do like all the vintage places on 5th, but find many of them to be too high priced. Anyone been to this one?
“…use expensive materials and building techniques to end up with something that’s really ugly and cheap looking?”
Apply that to people and you’ve got the Hipster look.
