We’d been hearing through the grapevine for a while that the folks behind the Thirst Wine Merchants on Dekalb in Fort Greene were working on wine bar on the Crown Heights/ Prospect Heights border, so we were excited to read in the The Village Voice that the new venture opened last week. In addition to a catalog of slow wines, the new joint–called Thirstbaràvin–is also serving up small plates from a former chef at Prune and some high-end coffee and espresso. It is up and running (with limited hours) at 629 Classon Avenue. Needless to say, we’re psyched. How about you Prospect and Crown Heights residents? GMAP

  1. Was there this Sat. My friend and I decided to try it out before dinner but ended up dining there at the bar. Owner extremely knowledgeable on wines, however, in fairness, as much as he would have liked to have discussed all the wines on the list there were more pressing things…like serving drink and food.
I thought the portions were a little small, but suited me since I wasn’t that famished. It would be wise of them to add a few more appetizers to the list so this would at least give a “tapas” feel to the place also.
Extremely well put together wine list and not that pricey for what you get quality wise.
    Wonderfully simple decor.

  2. I just have to respond to the “creepy” comment– I live near the wine store and find the owners + all the people who work there to be really, really nice. They’re excited about wine and have an interesting selection, though I buy only at their low end. I’m excited to visit the wine bar.

  3. I went to thirst on opening night. Wine selection is excellent, as is food, and the owners were warm and welcoming. As someone who lives two blocks away I personally think the location is a very smart move for them. Their place is also nothing like wine bar on Classon and St. Johns. Also, given all of the recent development and interest in North Crown Heights, there is certainly room in the neighborhood for two wine bars, if not a dozen.

  4. Our much-loved former landlord owns the place next door, was talking of opening an Italian restaurant (by which she meant real Italian food, not slices and veal parm) since she bought it. The location seemed a little crazy to us, but looks like we were wrong. I hope this is a sign that stretch of street is coming up!

  5. Actually a good location for those who know the area. Wine bar will benefit from Hello Living residents on Pacific btwn Washington and Grand. Also, there are a lot of young people moving in the “scrapyards”. BTW, 3-4 of the empty run down lots on Pacific between Grand and Classon sold over the lasts 2 months for condo development.

Thriving areas in Wburg and Bushwick that look just like this area get great press. Not so sure why people are so hard on this section of BK.
