On the heels of yesterday’s video of the Naval Hospital, here’s another slightly haphazard one of the Navy Yard itself. Since it was taken as we rode our bicycle around hoping not to catch the eye of any security personnel, it is also lacking a bit in production quality, so proceed with caution.

  1. Very informative. I still can’t get over the fact that these buildings, and the Naval Hospital grounds, are actually in Brooklyn, around the corner but hidden from view. Am going to ride my bike there as well to check out the sites. Thanks for this Brownstoner.

  2. Great job, Mr. B.

I liked your inclusion of historic photos and prints, as well as the background historical information. I’m very glad to hear they are going to be building a visitor’s/historic center. That indicates that at some point, the public will be able to enter the facility and walk around.

I disagree with people who say no one is interested in history or historic sites. I think, if done right, the Navy Yard could be a huge tourist attraction. You have important Naval and military history from the early 1800’s to WW2. The Civil War and WW2 histories alone would certainly be quite an exhibit.

With the possible inclusion of the film industry buildings – the chance for tourists to catch a glimpse of a couple of stars – you got money on the hoof. More than enough to insure the preservation and maintainance of the historic buildings. Too bad they couldn’t save at least part of Admiral’s Row. Even one house…..
